Mental Health Awareness Month Begins, Self Care Tips - 47abc - WMDT

DELMARVA – May marks Mental Health Awareness Month and we are consulting with a local psychologist to review the importance of self-care.

Veronica Correa, a licensed clinical social worker at the Center for Personal Wellbeing in Salisbury, told 47 ABC that May also marks the start of spring, which means spring cleaning, and that goes for her mental health.

Correa says that even if you don't have any serious mental health issues right now, it's a good time to work on yourself because it can help you prepare for when life takes a turn. That means activities like 5 minutes of meditation a day, breathing, hiking in nature, yoga, and even journaling. "This mental cleansing or mental shower has to be done every day, it's an emotional cleansing and emotional cleansing," explains Correa.

Although resources are available, Correa says that sometimes just focusing on stilling the mind can make a difference. "It's like saving money, you think I don't need it now, but yeah, one day you're going to need it and it's great to have, it's the same but it's emotional resilience." Correa adds, " You build resilience and become like an oak tree, strong and no matter what storm comes your way, you will be able to weather it or help others when they are struggling.

Correa also says that children's mental health is a growing concern, so now is a good time to speak to your children, students and anyone who doesn't feel safe to raise a concern.
