Coffee consumption is booming worldwide. As of spring 2022, 66% of Americans drink coffee every day, more than any other beverage, including water. And while one-cup systems like Keurig are popular, 41% of Americans still use drip coffee makers. That probably means there are a lot of paper coffee filters out there too.
Paper coffee filters are very absorbent and tightly woven. This means they can easily filter out most of the micro-meals and oils found in ground coffee. This tight weave and absorbency also make them perfect for uses other than coffee filtration.
Here are 11 different ways to use your paper coffee filters:
1. Cover a food container
Place several fully opened coffee filters on the bottom of your plastic cookie cutters or food containers . They catch crumbs and absorb excess oil, making cleaning easier.
2. Use it as a spoon rest
After you've stirred a pot of spaghetti or chili sauce, you don't want to leave that messy spoon on the counter or stovetop until you stir again. In addition to contamination of the surface, crumbs, dust, dirt and other debris can be picked up. Instead, place a coffee filter on your stovetop or counter and let the spoon rest there .
3. Pre-filter the water while walking or hiking
If you're planning a walk or hike that requires you to filter water from a stream or pond, put some coffee filters in your bag. If the water you need to filter is cloudy, pour it through a coffee filter first to catch large debris that could clog your professional filter and render it useless. Of course, this makes the water undrinkable, but the final filtration will be more efficient.
4. Filter out broken pieces of cork
It happens to everyone at some point. You open a bottle of wine and the cork breaks, causing bits of cork and smaller pieces to fall into the bottle. It's easy to get large pieces of cork out of the wine glass, but the fine pieces of cork stay and ruin the flavor and texture of the wine. Next time a cork breaks, pour the wine into your glass through a coffee filter that easily catches the fine bits of cork.
5. Use for kids craft projects.
Looking for an easy craft for preschoolers? Take white paper coffee filters and use them to create a "bouncy" basketball. Thats how it works:
- Flatten the coffee filters with your hands.
- Invite the children to color them orange.
- Help the children draw black basketball lines on the "ball" (a cross and two semicircles will do).
- Have the children use glue sticks to attach the ball to a piece of construction paper by placing the ball on the left or right side of the paper.
- Help the children draw a black tick on the other side of the ball to show how it bounces.
6. Clean your vehicle's dashboard
Many people rely on using coffee filters to clean certain surfaces. One that goes well with coffee filters is your vehicle's dashboard . Dashboards get dusty, but can easily be cleaned with a coffee filter sprayed with a little olive oil. The filter oil helps trap dust, reduces static electricity and gives the board a nice shine.
7. Use as regular paper
Need to jot down a note or an idea but can't find scrap paper? Use a coffee filter instead.
8. Absorb excess fat
Instead of draining the bacon grease by placing the cooked bacon on a paper towel, use a coffee filter. Coffee filters are designed to absorb oils , so they're a little cleaner than paper towels or other materials. You can even use coffee filters to dry the oil on your face.
9. Use it as toilet paper
You go to the bathroom only to find to your dismay that you are out of toilet paper . If you have coffee filters handy, you're in luck. You can use them as spares until you can reach the store to refill. Just a note: you should never throw away anything but toilet paper, just like you shouldn't throw away paper towels, neither should you throw a coffee filter on your vanity.
10. Make a fire
Can't find good tinder to light your campfire ? If you've packed some coffee filters, they will work just fine. Even better if you can put some oil or grease on the filter first.
11. Cover the dishes in the microwave
People often cover microwave food with plastic wrap or waxed paper. But it's not ideal. Plastic wrap contains chemical additives that can leach into food during microwave processing. And while wax paper is healthier than plastic wrap, it's coated with paraffin wax, which can melt at high temperatures. Paper coffee filters, on the other hand, are microwave safe , so use those instead.
