Keep your veal kitchen clean with these 5 tips

Nobody wants to eat on a dirty plate or be prepared in a dirty kitchen. This also applies to calves! Here are five tips to keeping your calf's kitchen clean and tidy:

1. A triple threat: The combination of detergents, disinfectants and disinfectants is an excellent way to minimize bacterial growth in calf kitchens. Try to keep all three near the sink.

Detergents are used to degrade organic deposits such as fats and proteins in milk and milk substitutes, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Once a surface has been cleaned with a cleaning agent , a disinfectant is used to kill microorganisms. The use of detergents and disinfectants is an effective combination to reduce bacterial load and prevent the formation of biofilms. A disinfectant helps to reduce the amount of microorganisms on a surface but is not as effective as a disinfectant.

2. Rinse, soak, wash, repeat! - The cleaning of calf and heifer feeding equipment is an integral part of any dairy. Without proper cleaning and hygiene of the feeding equipment, diseases can spread quickly between the calves. Here's the best way to wash dishes:

Rinse with warm water at about 90 ° C to remove dirt and milk residue inside and outside the feeding device. Do not use hot water to rinse.

Dip the calf feed for 20 to 30 minutes in a mixture of warm water of about 30 ° C and 1% clean chlorinated alkaline detergent.

Wash the inside and outside of the feeding device with a brush. You can also wash the bottles and buckets in the industrial dishwasher. Manually clean the bottle teat with a brush.

Rinse the inside and outside of the calf feeding equipment again with warm water containing 50 ppm chlorine dioxide.

Allow the unit to drain and dry before using it again. Avoid stacking the concrete floor or planks upside down, as this may interfere with drying and drainage.

Keep chaos at bay: no one likes a disorderly workplace, especially in the kitchen! Take time to set up labeled storage containers for various personal care products such as gloves, ear tags and syringes. Tip: Transparent compartments ensure good visibility.

Rack installation is also a great way to keep buckets and bottles away from the counter while still allowing enough airflow for easy drying.

4. Dehumidify: Have you ever noticed how humid it can be in the calf area? If you use all the water to keep the equipment clean, the humidity in the calf kitchen can increase. A warm and humid climate creates ideal conditions for mold growth. We do not want to be prepared for our calves to feed on milk! To minimize the risk, invest in a small dehumidifier to keep the conditions dry.

5. Adhere to a cleaning program : Like toilets at the gas station, your home's calf cleaning program requires a cleaning program on the back of your door. By regularly cleaning the milk mixing station you can ensure the order and health of your calves. Set up a simple cleaning routine that can be done on a regular basis, then hang that schedule where it is easily recognizable.
