The 52-year-old Debra Novacluse cleaning lady was found in a sleeping bag with a bloodstained mattress by cleaning staff in a Kamloops motel almost four years ago, the court said today on the first day of the trial, with the man accused of killing her.
David Miller was charged with murdering Novacluse and initially assumed responsibility for his death, but pleaded not guilty before the Kamloops Supreme Court today, January 13.
Prosecutor Monica Fras said the Kamloops RCMP was called to the Super 8 Motel on the morning of August 27, 2016. The police found Novacluse in a blue sleeping bag with a bloodstained mattress on the top. Novacluse was also injured on the body, explains Fras.
The RCMP identified Miller as the person who rented the motel room for two nights on August 25 and 26, 2016. The police examined the surveillance images and found that Miller left the motel room on the morning of August 27th. , 2016 in the victim's vehicle.
Novacluse's vehicle was later found in Calgary, Alberta. However, Miller was arrested in Ontario a few days later on September 1, 2016. According to Fras, Miller told the police that he initially assumed "responsibility" for Novacluse's death.
The lawyers met today to begin a one-week direct hearing to determine if Miller volunteered to testify to the police.
The trial is expected to take five weeks to begin on Monday, January 20.
