ABC11 asked for a camera interview with the administrators. Instead, a spokesman sent the following statement:
Our practices take into account the safety of all students with illnesses and allergies, including but not limited to food and the environment. Cleaning practices are dictated by the WCPSS guidelines on food allergies and are based on scientific literature and consultations provided by medical practices in the region, including UNC and Duke.
According to these guidelines, our child nutrition staff uses a surface disinfectant on the tables before and after breakfast and after the last lunch. These cleaning disinfectants are carried out in the absence of pupils, and there is enough time for the disinfectant solution to dry. Until the disinfectant solution is completely dry, it can be toxic to some children. The rapid fluctuation of students in our cafeterias during lunch does not allow for safe handling of chemicals between courses. During these transitions, the tables are cleaned with water.
To ensure the safety of all students, we place particular emphasis on washing hands thoroughly and frequently throughout the day, including before and after meals. For students with severe allergies, we can take precautions that include sitting in an assigned seat, using a barrier such as tablecloth or paper towel, lunching from the student's box, and / or setting a warning sign of student allergies. lunch packet
We also emphasize to parents how important it is not to send their children to school when they are sick or show signs of illness. Parents should keep their children at home if they have any of the following symptoms:
- Fever of 100 degrees F or more
- Nausea or vomiting
- Strong headache
- diarrhea
- watery red eyes with yellow drainage
- undetected rash
Children should stay at home until they have had fever and antipyretic medication for at least 24 hours.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cleaning and disinfecting surfaces is part of a comprehensive approach to preventing infectious diseases in schools.
While receiving the flu vaccine is the first line of defense while staying at home when you are sick, washing your hands, coughing, and sneezing, the CDC offers cleaning and disinfection tips to stop the spread of the vaccine, including at least the flu Use soap and water to remove germs from surfaces.
Walton said he shares the petition with other parents and is trying to share this information with those who may not know how WCPSS cleans the tables during the day.
"Some of them don't have children at school yet, and others have, but everyone was appalled that they simply washed the tables with water between breakfasts," said Walton. "I want (WCPSS) to clean the tables with a detergent, even if they have to be rinsed with water between breakfasts to remove dirt."
