GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas (KXII) - Staying at home during the COVID-19 epidemic is more than just a suggestion in many parts of the country. However, if you need to get going, there are ways to make sure you don't bring the virus home.
"If you can stay at home as our government has requested, stay away. This is the best way to prevent this disease. I personally do not visit my own mother," said Dr. Harvey Castro.
"Every trip you take gives you the opportunity to expose yourself, so try to limit it as much as possible," said Donna Glenn, director of infection, prevention, and control at Texoma Medical Center.
Castro and Glenn agree that staying at home is the best way to prevent COVID-19 from spreading.
But if you need to go out, there are a few things you can do to stay safe.
Before entering, Dr. recommends Castro that you take off your shoes and keep them in a bag outside, in the car or near the door.
"These are his outdoor shoes so his shoes never touch his home," Castro said.
He also suggests changing as soon as you get home.
Castro and Glenn said people need to regularly clean the surfaces of their homes.
"Lysol, bleach and alcohol products, almost all cleaning products kill COVID," said Glenn.
"Things that are metallic, the disease can last up to five days, so I'll wash the doorknob and your keys," Castro said.
Castro also said that the coronavirus can live in plastics for 24 to 48 hours.
But the key is to wash your hands.
"Wash your hands before getting out of your car. The more you wash your hands, the cleaner you want to be," Castro said.
"Instead of cleaning everything you touch, you just do a good job of cleaning and washing your hands, everything will be fine," said Glenn.
