While many people are busy cleaning up to protect themselves from the corona virus, local health and emergency services are asking residents to do so safely.
The Livingston County Emergency Department and Livingston County's Health Department report that in recent months, calls to US poison control centers have increased by 20% due to exposure to cleaner and disinfectant products. Cleaning is important to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Health and emergency officials, however, want residents and their families to be safe and smart. They offer the following tips: Store chemicals, including hand disinfectants, out of reach. Children. Health promotion coordinator Natasha Radke emailed WHMI that the highest percentage of reported exposures occurs in children aged 0 to 5 years, with the most likely route of exposure being taking instructions on the label. Do not mix chemicals and only use water at room temperature when diluted, unless indicated on the label. Always wear protective equipment and use cleaning agents in well-ventilated areas. If chemical exposure has occurred, contact Poison Control immediately online at https://triage.webpoisoncontrol.org/#/exclusions at 1-800-222-1222.
