Aldi gave seven practical tips that customers can use to make sustainable purchases without breaking the bank.
The retailer recommends looking for sustainable seasonal fish, fruits, and vegetables and handling humanitarian cleaning products with care.
These little steps can help make a difference for the planet, even on a limited budget.
Here are seven sustainable shopping tips from Aldi:
1. Seasonal business
Fruits and vegetables are often cheaper and tastier when they are in season in Ireland because there are simply more available. Buying Irish also means helping Irish farmers and reducing food miles. Aldi's weekly Super 6 offers offer a wide selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables in abundance at even cheaper prices than usual.
2. Reduce food waste
The best way to save money is to eat everything you buy, as households are estimated to throw away a fifth of all the food they buy every week. Buying in bulk and cooking food that can be frozen and eaten later is an easy way to develop the food you buy. Be careful of the numerous purchase offers that can lead to you buying more than you really need.
3. Look for fish that have been certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
By choosing seafood with the MSC Blue Fish Label, you support independently certified sustainable fishing. Good management practices help ensure that fish stocks and habitats are healthy and that the livelihoods of fishing communities are secure.
4. Switch to biodegradable wipes
Face towels and baby wipes often contain plastic that is difficult to decompose and environmentally harmful. When shopping, look for biodegradable wipes made from vegetable materials to get a more environmentally friendly solution. Aldi now has biodegradable Lacura facial tissues in stock.
5. Human cleanliness
Many buyers are looking for humanitarian cosmetics and toiletries, but people often don't know that many household cleaners are also tested on animals. All Aldi-specific household and cleaning products as well as cosmetic and personal care products are approved as part of the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny program, the international gold standard for human products.
6. Reuse your shopping bag
Customers can buy a range of environmentally friendly reusable shopping bags in Aldi stores, including a 100% compostable shopping bag, paper bags and a paper bag for life. In our 142 Irish branches, we have also introduced bags of 100% compostable products to replace old single-use plastic bags, eliminating over 10 million single-use bags each year.
7. Reject black plastic
Aldi has committed to removing all black plastic from its staple line by the end of 2020. To date, Aldi has removed more than 10 million undetectable black plastic trays from its range of fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh fish and fresh fish.
