MARQUETTE, Michigan (WLUC) - As we approach the weekend of July 4th, warm weather and high winds pose a high fire risk in many parts of the Upper Peninsula.
For people who spend time in the forest making a fire, it is advisable to keep the water nearby to pour it over the fire when it is done until the area has cooled down. Since fireworks can be used on the holiday weekend, it is recommended to put them in the trash in water before throwing them.
According to the DNR of Michigan, nine out of ten forest fires across the state are man-made, and this advice could help prevent them from occurring.
"Take that extra time, think more about it to make sure your fire is out, or make sure your fireworks are out before throwing it away. It could really save a lot of resources and possibly property, or even live, "said John Pepin, a Michigan MNR public information officer.
If you see signs of a forest fire, always call 911 to report it.
