We have all seen the devastating effects of forest fires in some parts of the country, but it is important that all homeowners also understand the potential danger of fires lurking in their own home.
Take the time to conduct a fire risk assessment to protect your home and prevent fires. Fire damage can be devastating, but you can take steps to keep your home and family safe.
The Greater Houston and South Texas Better Business Bureau offers the following tips:
Clean your fireplace and do other repairs . Consult a chimney sweep or fireplace service company for professional cleaning before the weather gets cooler. There may be other types of repairs or maintenance that require professional help. Visit BBBHouston.org for a list of reputable companies or to see a company that you would like to hire. You can read customer complaints and reviews to better understand how the company is doing.
Check these cables . Check all electrical cables not only in living rooms, but also outside the house, as well as in the attic, in the basement and in the basement. Remove cables that are frayed, stuck, or hot during use. Do not run cables under carpets.
Check your smoke alarms and fire extinguishers . None of these things last forever. Smoke alarms must be tested monthly and replaced every 10 years. Fire extinguishers should be tested annually and replaced or serviced according to the date marked on the fire extinguisher. Make sure everyone in your household knows how to use the fire extinguisher in your home.
Clean your dryer and ventilation slots . It can be surprising how quickly lint builds up in vents and ducts. Replace all plastic vents with metal vents.
Inventory of flammable products . Know what flammable items and chemicals are in your garage and basement. Make sure they are properly sealed and kept away from objects that can ignite them.
Visit your local fire department . Fire departments are a great community resource that provides practical advice and statistics about fires in your community. Many offer free smoke detectors and special training on fire safety.
Plan your escape route . Even after taking preventive security measures, the unexpected can happen. During a house fire, residents may only have a minute or two to leave their homes. Having a plan and putting it into action can help eliminate panic in an emergency. Try to have two exits from each room.
