  • Take enough time to get the job done. If it all sounds too overwhelming, break it down into small tasks over several days to make it clearer.
  • Have a party and get the whole family involved! Think of it as the last holiday hurray before all the decorations are gone. Play Christmas music and make hot chocolate bombs to make the clean up happy and tingly.
  • Pay attention to what Christmas decorations you are wearing and really loving. If your Christmas decorations seem to be increasing year on year, stay in control by limiting the number of storage bins and only keeping what is right for you.

Now you may be looking at your empty house and feeling the need to fill it with new decorations for spring. Take a break and see why O'Brien says the blank canvas could be the fresh start you need to start the new year.

"I find it very refreshing and was very excited on Sunday afternoon when all of my Christmas decorations were put away," said O'Brien.

  • Embrace the open space - a neat living space can have a positive effect on your mood. An open space invites more sunlight and helps to keep your head clear. Try to keep your house open for at least the month of January to see how this affects your daily routine.
  • Reuse, donate or throw away: Before buying anything new for your home, take a look at what you already have and see if there is anything you can use there first. You will be amazed what you can find when everything is cleared up. Clean items that you no longer need or need by giving or throwing them away.
  • Minimize any decoration - your coat doesn't have to be completely covered in tchotchkes. Reduce it by adding an instructional element or two, then use the same method on the rest of your home.
  • Replace Christmas greenery with real plants - houseplants distinct positive effect on your health from, from reducing stress to improve air quality. Find easy-care plants like succulents to start your green thumb.
  • Rearrange your space: still not happy with the way your home looks? Try rearranging the rooms on your shelves, tables, and shelves for a free and easy upgrade.
