Here are some tips for caring for dry skin in winter

While winters in Arizona aren't usually that cold, they can be harsh when it comes to taking care of your skin. Colder weather combined with inadequate hydration, excessive exfoliation, and water that is too hot can lead to very dry skin.

Megan Routt, RN of Derma Health Skin and Laser , spoke to AZ Big Media about tips and tricks for treating dry skin on the face or body.

AZ Big Media: What do you recommend for people with dry skin?

Megan Routt: We generally have dry skin during the winter months because we have less moisture in the air and we live in Arizona. We have a naturally drier climate, but there are many different reasons for this. What people can have dry skin, be it skin conditions like eczema. and eczema can be removed in winter or with medication.

There are so many different ways to deal with dry skin. What many people don't realize is in the colder winter months when we jump in the shower and the water really does run out. hot, you are losing water deep from your skin which is in your skin layer, resulting in drier skin; then you get out of the shower and you lose the deep water from your skin, then you cleanse yourself and you lose more water, then your skin is very dry.

The best time to apply the moisturizer is right after you shower, while your skin is still damp. This creates an occlusion barrier to keep moisture in the skin. We also use very strong soaps or scrubs, such as brushes or loofahs, when showering. You really don't need to use something like this in the winter months. The water removes a lot of dirt and dead skin. and dirt on the top layer of our skin, and we don't usually sweat that much in winter, so I would use more creamy soap than just dry soap in the wrinkles, i.e. under the arms, which reduces the peeling of the skin. your skin.

ABM: What do you recommend for combination skin such as dry and sensitive?

MR: During the winter months, especially if you have acne skin, you can still have dry skin. Acne doesn't necessarily mean that you have oily skin. So it is very important to use a cream. moisturizing. A lot of people think the drier the better when it comes to acne, and even if your skin is peeling and very flaky, even if you are using something occlusive like Aquaphor. Very dry areas will not cause further pimples. Sometimes irritation can occur if used too often.   But make sure your skin stays moist and keep moisturizer on all day.

You can apply moisturizer to your face about 3-4 times a day if it is very dry in some areas. With acne skin, the forehead can become very dry. So make sure you apply enough moisture. Moisturizer for this area to keep it hydrated so the skin doesn't have to produce more oil to make up for it.

ABM: What do you recommend about how people can keep their skin healthy when wearing a mask for long periods of time?

M .: When it comes to wearing masks, I'm a big fan of disposable masks. When washing masks, hand wash them with mild antibacterial soap. Many people wash them with their clothes thinking that it will clean them. However, you should wash them separately in the sink and clean them with antibacterial soap, as masks can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

I'm a fan of disposable masks or I just wash my hands and wash them after each use. It will help avoid pimples on the lower part of the face and avoid applying makeup. There is no need to apply makeup to the lower part of the face. Just make sure you have chapstick as it is still winter so our lips have a tendency to comb and skip makeup easily in the lower part of the face. lower part of the face and just apply makeup to the eyes and brows. .

Maskne is one thing and I think it has to do with cleaning the mask. I know for myself that I had been wearing a homemade mask for a long time and I noticed it splashed and realized that the mask contained this bacteria; As someone like me with cystic acne, my best bet is to wear a disposable mask every day so I don't get all these rashes and bacteria. When you exhale that CO2, you have moisture and the moisture is on your face. This moisture can cause breakouts as it just stays there with nowhere to go.

ABM: What are the home or store recommendations for ingredients that can help people manage some of these skin problems, acne, or dryness?

MR: As for the body, when you get out of the shower, put a generous amount of body moisturizer on your skin, the thicker the better, so something with shea butter and something not. It won't irritate your skin.

For the face, a thicker moisturizer would be really important. One of my favorites is Skin Script Moisturizing Moisturizer . It also comes in a tub and I use it on my body too. SkinScripts has another moisturizer called Cacteen Balancing Moisturizer. This is the moisturizer I recommend on customers' faces if they have combination skin. The product can be adjusted to the amount of water on your skin and can release the amount of moisturizer you need. The product is a very smart product so the product will balance your skin according to your skin. when you apply the product.

ABM: Why do you think it is important that people take pride in taking care of themselves and their skin?

MR: There's a reason you have to put the mask on first on an airplane because you can only help people if you are healthy, safe and taking care of yourself. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. If you have very dry skin it can be a symptom of other things. When these tips and tricks don't work, you should see a doctor sometimes as there may be underlying health. Status.

So taking care of your skin is very important, and dry skin hurts, it is painful, it can crack, it can cause infection. Hence, it is important to keep your skin hydrated in order to keep the water in your body. In Arizona it is useful to have a cool mist humidifier. The humidity is very good for the skin, hair and body in general to have a little more moisture and then keep a humidifier in the room with a cool mist. homemade really helps your skin. Day to day.
