We wash our towels the wrong way, so you should clean them

You may not be thinking about your towel or how to wash it, but it turns out that there is a right way to wash it, and you were probably wrong.

Think back to the first time you bought your towel and you will likely remember how fluffy it was and how each hotel deserves it.

Now compare this picture to your towel and you can be sure it is probably stiff and a little rough.

But there's no need to throw it away just yet, as Christy's towel designer Lucy Ackroyd shared her top tips on how to restore towels and how to wash properly.

She told Tyla that the most common mistake is washing large numbers of towels together.

Lucy cautioned against overloading the machine as towels require space to "breathe and flow" as this space allows for proper "rinse and rinse".

As a rule of thumb, wash your towels at 40 degrees, as any higher altitude can cause them to wear out too quickly.

"If you try too many things, you get a packed pile with pockets of moisture all over the place, resulting in towels being rough and stiff," he warned.

And it goes without saying that you need to group the colors, but he also advised only washing the towels together to prevent the fibers from transferring to other items of clothing.

While you might be thinking about cleaning your towels by washing them in hot water, Lucy claimed that doing so can actually damage them in the long run.

She said, "Typically wash your towels in 40 degrees as they can wear out too quickly at any height."

But he said it was good practice to wash them every now and then at 60 degrees to remove the "oils and bacteria" that can build up.

Lucy also revealed that towels should be shaken before and after washing to get the most out of them.

She explains that it helps open the fibers "by allowing the detergent to penetrate all of your pores and leave them super clean".

And shake them again after they're out of the machine as this will loosen the fibers again and make your towels "super soft and fluffy".

Tips for washing towels

  • Do not overload the washing machine when washing towels.
  • Wash towels only together
  • Wash at 40 ° C - wash occasionally at 60 ° C
  • Shake towels out before and after washing.
  • Do not dry on the cooler

Her final tip might surprise most Brits: As Lucy notes, you should never dry towels on a radiator.

Explaining why, she said, "This will result in a rough finish, exactly what you want to avoid!"

Instead, she recommends switching between drying clothes and air drying when you have enough space.
