"Smells good !" : Tip for cleaning toilet brushes to remove odors, stains and "sanitize"

Bleach is often the best ingredient to add to your toilet brush holder to keep it hygienic, but according to one cleaning enthusiast , there's an even better way to keep your toilet bowl and toilet bowl cleaner. The Instagram user-turned-queen of home hacks explained that shaving cream is actually a "great" alternative to harsh chemicals like bleach.

Self-proclaimed cleaning expert Carolina McCauley showed her followers the simple trick on her Instagram profile.

He filled an empty brush holder with foamy white shaving cream and wet the clean brush.

After coating the brush with the thick product, he went to the toilet bowl and gave it a vigorous scrubbing.

While scrubbing the china bowl, Carolina found that shaving cream is "an excellent toilet cleaner" for several reasons.

She said: "It removes stains from porcelain, it contains alcohol to sanitize and it smells great."

After cleaning the bowl, the "Queen of Home Tricks" placed the brush in the water at the bottom of the toilet and retrieved it.

This will flush away the shaving cream and dirt that has been hiding in the bristles of the brush.

After flushing the toilet brush, the verified Instagram user placed the brush handle under the toilet seat with the bristles hanging over the bowl.

After allowing the brush to dry, the final step is to spray more shaving foam onto the brush and place it back in the holder.

According to other cleaning experts, including Lynsey Crombie, this trick works just as well as a cleaning spray and is "rather similar" in effect to commercial bathroom cleaners.

While shaving cream uses slightly different ingredients, the alcohol in the creamy liquid is the main element that provides the bacteria-fighting benefits.

While this trick is very effective for cleaning a dirty toilet, it only works if your brush and holder are clean to begin with.

Removing existing dirt and grime from this handy tool is easier than you think, although it does require you to wear gloves.

Cleanipedia experts recommended using a disinfectant spray to spray the inside and outside of the brush holder.

For stubborn dirt and bacteria, you can soak it in a bucket of hot, soapy water for an hour before rinsing and then spraying with disinfectant.

After cleaning, allow the medium to drain and dry completely.

To clean the toilet brush, take it out of the holder and let it drip onto the toilet bowl (balance the handle under the toilet seat) for 10 minutes.
