"What did you 'go through' the longest because you didn't know...

Humans are extremely intelligent. We discovered electricity, we figured out how to put people on the moon, we cured or eradicated countless diseases, and we kept innovating. However, sometimes our brains just can't figure out the easiest ways to get things done without a little extra help from someone else. Put scientists in a lab and you have a COVID-19 vaccine within a year. On the other hand, put regular people in your kitchen and they might not figure out the best way to clean a microwave or blender for decades.

Someone recently asked on Reddit, " What's the longest time you've been doing 'the hard way' because you didn't know there was a much easier way?" And thousands of readers responded with their best life hacks. We've rounded up some of their most helpful answers below, along with tips you might be embarrassed to admit you never knew, but don't worry: your secret is safe with us. From keyboard shortcuts to cleaning tips that will save you time and effort, we hope you learn something new from this list of tips.

35 People Who Figured Out An Easier Way To Do Something They Were Doing The "Hard Way" For Far Too Long I thought that hard work (giving 120%) brings many benefits. It turns out I'm still getting the same benefits and my sanity is only working at 80%.

Everyone's brain works a little differently. Some of us are better at math and science, while others are more artistic and learning an instrument is easier than memorizing math formulas. We all have our strengths. But because our brains are unique, we may not do all things the same way. For example, the way you clean your apartment can be very different from the way your best friend cleans theirs.

I realized that very quickly after I moved in with my partner. We both assumed that many things were obvious or implied, but after chatting about where to hang pictures on the wall, how to wash dishes, how to organize the kitchen, and more, we realized that our brain quiet is different. . And barring the occasional hassle or misunderstanding, our differences are often a great asset. However, two heads are better than one.

(Disclaimer: ADHD is different for everyone; medication isn't a magic "cure"; medication isn't the answer for everyone, and that's okay.)

35 People Who Figured Out An Easier Way To Do Something They Were Doing The "Hard Way" For Far Too Long My dishwasher is in front of my utensil drawer. For years I shoved as many utensils as possible into my hands when emptying the dishwasher. I would inevitably drop a few, and my hardwood floor has a few trinkets from dropped forks and spoons.

One day at work, a colleague unloaded the dishwasher, took out the utensil basket and carried it to the utensil drawer. I've never felt so stupid

The tips on this list are great because they can open your mind to do things in new ways that you never thought possible. If your parents never showed you how to lock the trigger when you put gas in your car, you might never have noticed. It's amazing how smart we are when we focus on a problem, but when we accept that "it is," we can easily turn off our brains and do the same things forever.

Whether we know it or not, we all want to work smarter, not harder. Who wants to waste their precious time and energy if they don't have to? Not me! So when it comes to being more productive, let's checkout Belle Cooper's list of Zapier tips for becoming more efficient. First, he recommends resisting the urge to multitask. Our brains are not designed to switch quickly between tasks or information. So, if we only do one thing at a time, it will give our brain a break and likely allow us to complete each task more accurately and efficiently.

35 People Who Figured Out An Easier Way To Do Something They Were Doing The "Hard Way" For Far Too Long When I was a kid we had a pool, we swam in the public pool all winter. So much water time. The worst part was going out and pee because as a kid you had to take off your bathing suit and sit cold and naked and then you had to put on a cold wet wetsuit and it was sticky and freezing and awful. I would endure it until I had to go.

It has happened to me as an adult, you can just pull the crotch piece to the side and it stays in place when you urinate.

EDIT: Thanks everyone, glad to know I wasn't the only one! If I can just help one person avoid the awkward dance of pulling up their cold, wet, crooked suit straps, then my job here is done.

Belle also suggests taking more breaks if you want to increase your productivity while you work. While it may seem counterintuitive, there are a variety of science-backed ways to take smarter, more useful breaks. For example, the Pomodoro technique involves working in short sprints of 25 minutes each, then taking a short 5 minute break, plus a longer break every 4 "sessions". Another option that has proven effective is to exercise for 52 minutes followed by a 17 minute rest. Of course, we can all choose the method that resonates most with us, but the fact of the matter is that our brains and bodies are not designed to focus for too long without taking a quick break. We get tired, our attention spans decrease, and our bodies need to get up and stretch or walk around every hour or so. Ultimately, you'll be far more productive if you take the right breaks.

35 People Who Figured Out An Easier Way To Do Something They Were Doing The "Hard Way" For Far Too Long I keep shaking the shaving gel, struggling to get more than a quarter of the way out of the box... until I realize they are pressurized and each shake causes it to depressurize, making shipping more difficult. I've used many now and actually got the bottom out of each can without shaking it... I'm 40 and also an engineer.

I've had a complete and total brain fart since I started shaving.

Another productivity tip Belle recommends is to load up your week. If you eliminate your most important or overwhelming tasks first, the rest of the week will flow smoothly and you can start the weekend slowly. It's natural for many of us to hesitate and procrastinate when we can, but it's best to fight this urge. You'll look forward to the weekend a lot more if the bulk of your work gets done on Tuesday, rather than dealing with a mountain of stress on Friday and then having no energy to enjoy the evening. Also, we tend to have the most energy at the beginning of the week, provided we are refreshed after resting at the end of the previous week or on our days off. I might as well use all that energy!

Some things.

First, place an absorbent hair tie around each wrist before washing your face. They prevent water from running down your arms when rinsing and the inside of the bathrobe sleeves from getting uncomfortably wet.

Second, before I go on a trip, I change my sheets and towels so my bed will be clean and fresh when I come home exhausted.

Third, if it needs ironing, don't waste my money. I will use it exactly once.

35 People Who Figured Out An Easier Way To Do Something They Were Doing The "Hard Way" For Far Too Long To hang up pictures. I used to meticulously measure and line up my nails to match the hardware on the back of the frame. Now I just use a piece of painters tape, I tape it to the back of the frame, I frame the hardware on the frame, then I remove the tape and tape it to the wall and that gives you the exact position for your hooks and nails to hang .

Similarly, it might be a good idea to schedule tasks based on your energy level. In addition to trying to get as much done as possible early in the week, it can also be helpful to let your personal habits guide you as you get things done. As an early riser, seize the moment in the morning when you feel fresher and full of energy. If you're a night owl, it might be best to take it easy in the morning and get as much work done as possible in the evening. In fact, you can set your schedule online here so you'll know when you're most alert and inspired. We all fall into the lark, third bird, or owl category, and knowing that information about ourselves can make a world of difference when planning tasks.

35 People Who Figured Out An Easier Way To Do Something They Were Doing The "Hard Way" For Far Too Long For dusting things like baseboards, window sills and window frames, the best tool is a (clean) brush. I used to always use a cloth or something special to remove the dust, but the brush is much quicker and easier. I now keep an inexpensive 2 inch brush solely for dusting. It also works great on cobwebs.

Many of us keep to-do lists all week, month, or our entire lives, but have you ever thought about making one for each day? Blogger Leo Babautarecommends setting your most important tasks (or MITs) each day to ensure you get at least these 3 things done. Of course, it's always good to do more than 3 things on your to-do list every day. But if you make sure at least these 3 tasks are done, you'll feel like you're in a productive period and anything else will count as a bonus. You'll likely feel the sluggishness and most of the time won't want to stop, even after your MITs are done.

35 People Who Figured Out An Easier Way To Do Something They Were Doing The "Hard Way" For Far Too Long I sucked on nail clippers as a kid. I knew how to put my fingernail on the chompy tip on the end but didn't realize the handle/lever had unfolded. So I pushed really hard until I broke my nail on the blades. It was an embarrassing time before my mother saw me and showed me how to open the lever.

Do you often feel that your energy level drops in the afternoon? You might be wondering if it's wiser to take a nap or have a cup of coffee, but why not both? That's right, you can actually take an afternoon "coffee nap," whichHealthline says consists of drinking a cup (or even two) of coffee and then quickly waiting 15 to 20 minutes while you wait for the caffeine to kick in . Effect. In any case, power naps shouldn't last longer than half an hour to avoid falling asleep, so the short coffee nap is just perfect. Well, I wouldn't recommend going overboard and drinking 5 cups of coffee a day, but not falling asleep (pun intended) at the suggestion of taking an afternoon nap or having an extra cup of coffee. Your body and probably your productivity will thank you.

35 People Who Figured Out An Easier Way To Do Something They Were Doing The "Hard Way" For Far Too Long I have mixed hair and I always brushed from roots to ends because that's how everyone did it and that's how they taught me. It wasn't until I saw a movie in my early twenties that a character's maid mentioned that the character with the messy hair ended up having to untangle the knots before working on the roots. I gave it a try and then gotten confirmation at work from other girls with similar hair that it's the way to do it if you have a certain type of tight curls... the years of crying because I've stranded my hair plucked and tore out 😭

Another great way to increase your productivity could be to turn off all notifications. Switch the phone to airplane mode when needed and don't worry about what's going on in the world. I promise you'll be able to text your friend or reply to this email in an hour or two. Just as we don't want to multitask, our brains shouldn't be simultaneously busy with work and everything that's happening on our phones. You'll be more focused and productive by eliminating distractions like Instagram and Facebook notifications.

Holding down the spacebar on your phone makes it much easier ~~ to select words in the text you want to copy ~~ to move the cursor to where you want it (sorry I wrote that while I was tired) . You did it the hard way, like you've been mad at your fat toes for way too long.

Write a random word in a text message. Hold down the spacebar for a second or two. Slide your thumb back and forth on the spacebar and the cursor will move. Makes it easy to remove a single letter in a long misspelled word.

Question the women.

Ignore anything you've seen on TV, movies, video games, read in books or websites, or heard from people with long lists of tips, steps, or ideas.

Just tell them you find them attractive or that you like them. There, ask for their number or set a date and time.

We tend to make this path harder than it should be.

This also applies to women who want to ask a man out on a date.

I used to spend a lot of time using nasty solvents and/or scouring pads to remove soap scum, bird droppings, and other similar residue from glass. Now I use a scraper and shave the glass. Often I don't even need to use detergent or water. Blade scrapers are amazing. And they are misnamed. You don't use them to scratch anything. Shave or brush away glass debris and other hard surfaces with the blade.

Extinguish the candles without giving off too much paraffin smoke.

Do not blow out or blow out the candle. When you do that, the wick releases a lot of smoke and stinks everywhere. Use a toothpick or similar tool (or even buy a "wick spoon" tool at a candle store) and dip the candle wick into the melted wax. The wax extinguishes the flame instantly without smoke. Just be sure to lift the wick out of the melted wax so the wax doesn't set on the wick and make it inaccessible.

The other benefit is that the wick stays covered in wax, ready for the next time you light it.
