Keeping towels clean and fluffy can be difficult, especially if you wash them with other items in the wash. Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed, shared top tips that help towels stay "softer" and "last longer". The expert explained: "Wash your new towels before using them.
"Almost all new towels are coated with fabric softeners, which are often used during the finishing process, giving them that extra luxurious look that you see in store.
"The lining can limit the absorbency of the towels, so it's best to wash them before first use."
It's also best to avoid harsh chemicals like bleach when washing, as these can affect the quality and color of the towels.
Although many fabric softeners like to wash off when washing, according to the expert you can do without it when washing towels.

When choosing a detergent, it is important to choose an organic detergent as it can work at lower temperatures, some as low as 30°C.
There are many brands that sell organic cleaning products, and it's also important to buy one that is strong and contains enough enzymes to effectively clean and remove dirt and stains.
If you decide to use a non-biological cleaning product, be sure to check the instructions as they often work at higher temperatures.
While many believe that adding towels to a mixed wash can speed up the drying process of your clothes, it's best to avoid it.

The bedding expert noted: "Keep your clothes and towels separate when washing. Washing towels with clothes can transfer a lot of bacteria between each garment in the wash cycle.
"Putting the towels in their own load allows the towels to dry more easily, as wet towels generally dry slower than clothes.
"Be sure to shake excess water off towels before putting them in the dryer as this will help fluff the material and keep it absorbent.
"Avoid leaving wet towels in the washing machine for long periods of time as this can lead to an unpleasant musty smell."
The ideal temperature for drying towels when using a tumble dryer is 40°C. If you don't use a dryer, they can take several days to dry naturally.
Jessica said: "It will help you achieve the smoothness you want while killing bacteria in the process.

Drying towels at very high temperatures can damage the fibres, especially when it comes to cotton. Although low heat can take longer to dry, it is important that towels last for years.
