With arctic air on its way, now is the time to make sure your heater is working properly. It will be very difficult to get repairs if something goes wrong over the bank holiday weekend.
As the colder months roll in, the phones at Choate Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing are ringing non-stop.
HVAC Services Manager Jason Smith said he gets about 120 calls a day from homeowners with problems with their home's heating system.
Smith said most can be avoided with proper maintenance. Be sure to replace your air filter and contact an HVAC professional to have your heating system checked. It may require tuning, just like your car.
"The best thing is to sign up for a maintenance program with a professional company that will come over and evaluate it," Smith said. "Whether you have a gas furnace or a heat pump system, you want to make sure your heat pump system is clean and you want to make sure your furnace is safe to operate."
It's also important to check the batteries in your carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they're up to date.
Freezing temperatures can also mean disaster in your home if you don't protect your plumbing properly.
To avoid burst pipes, Memphis Light Gas and Water and other plumbing experts have recommended keeping cabinet doors under bathrooms and kitchens open.
This allows hot air to circulate around the tubes.
The owner of Automatic Air Conditioning, Heating and Plumbing Services said he should also insulate the pipes, particularly the outside faucets.
Open the inner faucet with a slight trickle to keep the water in the system cold.
"The water is expanding and can damage the pipes," said owner Sam Mullins. "You don't know until it starts to thaw, then it starts to leak. Most of Memphis has copper pipes that rupture under water pressure.
By following these tips you will prevent your pipes from freezing over the holiday season.
