A garage is not usually a place associated with cleanliness and order. It may be a functional workspace for you, it may look unkempt to potential clients.

You don't want them to think you're not paying attention to details. A clean and tidy space gives your current and new customers peace of mind that your dealership provides quality, professional service and that their vehicle is in good hands when they leave.

It's important to understand the difference a polished and immaculate environment can make. Here's our guide to making sure your dealership is in top shape to make a good impression on your customers.

Before the working day

First, it's best to set yourself up for success by creating a simple and straightforward to-do list that can be completed before you open it.

For example:

  • Check that supplies are well stocked. This ensures that no matter what the day throws at you, you're ready to clean it all up.
  • After reviewing your inventory, plan for any cleaning supplies orders that you may have run out of.
  • Check your supply of clean towels and gloves.
  • Take a look at the parts washer and see if it needs a good cleaning or maintenance.

Then clean all surfaces. Grab your favorite cleaning solution and a clean cloth to wipe down the surfaces you use throughout the day. These can be wild about dirt, dust and debris. Walk past counters, tables, shelves and chairs.

Remember to clean all surfaces of appliances and door handles.

Give the shop a full swing. After a good cleaning of frequently used areas, grab a broom and sweep hard floors. Start in the maintenance area and continue through the waiting room, office, and entrance. While these areas may not stay clean all day, they make all the difference when tackling your after-work cleaning list.

Make sure the bathroom is clean. The bathroom is probably a favorite spot throughout the day. You probably want it to be as clean as possible no matter who is using it. Take the time to stock up on all inexpensive items like toilet paper and paper towels. Wash and scrub the toilet bowl well and don't forget to disinfect other surfaces like sinks and doorknobs.

After the working day

When the day is done, it's time to move on to the next steps on your cleaning checklist. While it might be tempting to skip some of these to save time and effort, making sure they get done will save you both of these tasks in the long run:

  • Start by disinfecting all the tools used throughout the day and make sure they are properly stored.
  • Take the time to do laundry, wash and dry any used towels and gloves, and throw away any that can no longer be used.
  • Clean all surfaces in the store again.

Sweep and vacuum. Dirt and debris accumulate on the floor throughout the day. Take the broom out again or connect the vacuum cleaner. Plan your work by sections for each area. This includes the waiting room, entryway, office, bathroom and of course the maintenance bays.

Be sure to save multiple items. Many things can be left out during the day and not return to where they should be. This may include cash registers, receipts, and sensitive documents or information.

Pack food and put it in the fridge if necessary. Organize pens and paper so they are ready for use the next day.

Check the deep cleaning schedule. Some parts of the store need a little more maintenance than others. Review the deep cleaning schedule and see what needs to be done. This may include taking out the steam cleaner or power washing heavy equipment and floors. Be sure to remove anything that needs time to dry and use the right products or machines for the job at hand.

Perhaps these tasks are already on your checklist or you need to add new ones. Keeping your store clean not only makes it a safe place to work, but also an attractive place where people feel safe stepping out of their vehicles.

Your business deserves to stay clean with the right tools. Make sure your space looks and works great by purchasing cleaning machines and equipment that make it a lot easier to cross things off your to-do list.
