Since its meteoric rise in popularity, TikTok has become a major source of emerging trends. The visual nature of the site means that the bold designs often get the most views because the videos are so eye-catching. Take the dark academic and bibliophile styles currently popular on TikTok: these styles feature dark and dramatic color schemes ; huge, oversized shelves; and sometimes an almost gothic feel. While these styles are beautiful, they can seem a little daunting when you're looking for a trend to carry over into your own home, especially if you're just looking for a little makeover.
Bold designs like Dark Academia and bibliophile decor may seem intense, but if you take a closer look, many of the defining elements of these trends are rooted in the hallmarks of classic decor. Warm, deep tones and traditional patterns are always in style, and the Preppy Relic look they are inspired by is growing in popularity both online and offline as people turn so much more to the comfort of home design.
So how do you take inspiration from viral fads without overdoing it? They take the pieces of a trend that suits your home and incorporate them into your style.
One of the centerpieces of all these trends is dark leather items. Leather furniture brings the depth and dimension of dark, literal college decor to a room without overwhelming your home.
And dark leather can also go beyond these themes. Paired with ocher and avocado tones, a leather sofa suddenly looks perfectly mid-century modern. In a cool and creamy space, a dark brown sofa offers balance and warmth, creating a more contemporary take on the country style. In fact, this classic sofa suits almost any decor, proving that dark leather decor might just be the perfect little trend to try right now.
Why dark leather parts are currently popular
Because social media allows people to voice their opinions on trends, looks evolve and smaller, more subtle (and sometimes more practical) trends often emerge. This is particularly true of dark leather furniture, which first gained popularity as a quirky, bibliophile offshoot of Dark College but has since blossomed into a trend of its own.
Smooth leather in dark, rich tones immediately evokes an atmosphere of sophistication and, combined with elements such as floor-to-ceiling shelves and dark woods, creates a classic look that goes very well with antique silver and maximalist trends. The darker colors of leather pieces are also popular in warm decors, making them a designer piece that suits many current styles.
After years of cool gray tones, browns and beiges are now the most popular neutral colors to decorate with, creating a warm and soothing color palette for the home.
"I'm also seeing a return to darker tones across the board, from leather and woods to accessories," says Javier Burkle, founder and director of Burkle Creative .
In addition to current trends, more and more people are also looking for durable pieces.
"We're seeing more and more people choosing a timeless, less modern vibe for their spaces," says Burkle. An oversized leather sofa or armchair fits right into this desire for pieces that stand the test of time.
How to incorporate dark leather decor into your home
If you want to try this trend, you're in luck; Leather pieces are incredibly versatile, allowing them to work with a range of different looks.
"Leather pieces have a very vintage vibe (which I love!) and work in so many rooms in the house," says Burkle.
The flexibility of leather furniture also means it's an easy upgrade to add to your current design scheme.
"I use leather neutrally," says Burkle. "It works well with almost everything! In my own home and in my overall personal style, I like to combine a dark leather piece with other rich, darker colors - I love the juxtaposition of a masculine vibe with toned colors and patterns. Interiors with rich shades of brown and brown in combination with monochrome palettes and textures also create a really special look.
If you are planning a major update, consider leather furniture as the ideal starting point for your design concept.
"When layering additional colors and textures, look for a nice dark leather piece to use as a base. A neutral leather sofa or chair is a great base before adding fun throw pillows, rugs and curtains (even on the seasonal rotation!!!!)" Burkle suggests.
Most importantly, don't be afraid to step out of the design box and make your own leather pieces. According to Burkle, it's about letting this trend work for you and not being afraid to flaunt the conventional.
"Personnellement, j'adore un mélange éclectique de pièces dans une maison, et c'est amusing de voir that de plus en plus de gens s'éloignent d'un seul style ou tendance pour leur maison et optent plutôt pour un look rasemblé qui reflète vraiment leur individualité et leur histoire.. A piece of furniture or an accessory made of Foncé leather offers a unique sense d'equilibre à n'importe quelle pièce et palette de couleurs, ancrant l'espace et lui donnant a sens unique de profondeur », dit -he.
So if you're looking for a quick way to test the waters with some of the biggest design looks of the year, try adding some leather to your home. It might be the perfect starting point for your updated design dreams.
