1. You take the time to wash the dishes
No question: washing dishes is a chore that few enjoy doing. But we're here to remind you that it takes less time than you think.
In fact, the longer you leave it on, the more likely it is that germs will be spread throughout your home.
Speaking to 720 ABC Perth , Associate Professor Barbara Mullan of Curtin University's School of Psychology said: "If you leave the dirty dishes behind at the end of the day and there are people and maybe animals in the house, there's likely to be a spread of bacteria, Associate Prof. Mullan.
"Bacteria live on surfaces, even clean ones, for up to four days.
"The bacteria can therefore remain alive for a long time in contaminated dishes such as leftovers."
2. You use a dirty sponge
Just because your sponge looks like it could do a few more laps with your dishes doesn't mean it can. Unfortunately, sponges need to be changed at least once a week or sooner. Replace dishcloths that can be added regularly, so it's best to opt for reusable ones like these that you can throw in the laundry.
3. You soak things that shouldn't be soaked.
Depending on the material, soaking will help remove stubborn food particles. Avoid soaking cast iron cookware and anything made of wood.
It's also not a good idea to fill the sink and soak dishes and cutlery before washing.
"You put the dishes in water that's less than 60 degrees, and that's the perfect breeding ground for bacteria," says assistant professor Barbara Mullan.
"You end up with a delicious bacterial soup, then you reach for the sink to unplug and wash the dishes. If you don't wash your hands properly, you contaminate the kitchen."
4. You use too much soap.
Similar to washing the laundry , the same goes for the dishes. You don't need as much detergent as you think. Using too much detergent means more suds, which means dishes are harder to wash. Not to mention it can sometimes leave a thick residue on your dishes.
5. They put dishes away while they're still wet.
Don't need to dry your dishes? While it might seem harmless to throw a few things in the drawer while it's still a little damp, it adds moisture to your drawers and closets. And we all know what happens when there is too much moisture in the house: mold !
What is the right way to wash dishes manually?
- Scrape as much food off your plates as possible
- wear rubber gloves
- Fill the sink with water that is as hot as possible
- use detergent
- Scrub the dishes with a clean tea towel or brush, removing any food debris.
- Dry your dishes before putting them away
So yeah, most of us have been washing dishes since dawn. But many are finding that germs and bacteria can spread throughout the home if dishes aren't washed properly. So stop putting it back on, use little detergent and use a clean sponge!
