The El Paso Fire Department wants to make sure that everyone uses their household chemicals safely.
Ministry officials provided a list of chemical safety tips:
· Only buy the amount of product you need.
· Follow the instructions on the label for storage, use and disposal.
Do not mix products. This can produce toxic gases or cause a fire.
· Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling chemicals.
· Keep the products in their original containers away from children and pets.
· Flammable materials should never be stored near open flames or heat sources in the sun.
· Using locks and safety rails on shelves and cabinets can prevent chemicals from falling or tipping over.
· Benzine containers on the outside should be placed on an open surface with the container on the ground
· Aerosol cans can contain chemicals that can burn. If you throw them away, they can explode or cause a fire.
· Rinse chemicals immediately. Wear gloves and glasses. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for eliminating spills.
· If someone has been exposed to a household chemical, contact 911 immediately.
· If there is a risk of fire or explosion, immediately evacuate and call 911 in a safe place.
Residents can bring hazardous household waste to one of the city's four collection points. Materials that can be disposed of in these locations include waste oil, paint, solvents, antifreeze, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, degreasers, cleaning fluids, waxes, pesticides, edible oils and edible oils.
