According to the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Genie offers new methods of cleaning and disinfecting aircraft on construction sites to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while working at height.
This information provides site managers and fleet managers with special precautions to ensure the safety and productivity of employees and locations.
"The current global pandemic of COVID-19 has significantly disrupted the air access industry," said Scott Owyen, director of engineering education at Terex AWP. "Airfields have been closed for many weeks to reduce the risk of virus infection and delay the spread of people who are already infected. Today, as construction sites are reopening worldwide, site managers and fleet managers need to consider how they can best protect workers and the spread of the virus can prevent. "
Owyen said that following CDC guidelines, Genie can provide recommendations on how air operators can most efficiently clean and disinfect machines before, during, and after each use.
Owyen says the primary goal of any airfield must be to create a safe and productive work environment. To do this, aircraft operators have to do the following when cleaning and disinfecting machines, Owyen explains:
Cleaning machines (1)
- Wear reusable or disposable gloves for routine cleaning and disinfection.
- Clean the surfaces with soap and water and then use a disinfectant. (Cleaning with water and soap reduces the amount of germs, dirt and contaminants on the surface. Disinfection kills germs on surfaces.)
- Practice the routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces.

We recommend the use of EPA registered household disinfectants. (2)
Some disinfectants registered by the EPA include:
- Fantastik® multi-purpose cleaner
- Scrubbing Bubbles® II - disinfectant for toilets
- Lysol® bathroom cleaner
- Lysol® Brand Mold & Mold Remover
- Follow the directions on the product label to ensure safe and effective use. Read the EPA infographic on how to use these disinfectants safely and effectively. Many products recommend:
- Keep the surface moist for a while (see product label)
- Precautions such as wearing gloves and good ventilation when using the product
- Diluted home bleaching solutions can also be used if they are suitable for the surface.
- Check the label to see if your bleach is a disinfectant and make sure the product has not passed its expiration date.
- The bleach that has not expired is effective against corona viruses when properly diluted.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper ventilation and use. Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other detergent.
- Leave the solution on the surface for at least 1 minute.
- To make a bleaching solution, mix:
- 5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) of bleach per gallon of water OR
- 4 teaspoons of bleach per liter of water
- Bleaching solutions can be disinfected for up to 24 hours. Note that bleach can adversely affect warning signs and other safety labels.
- Alcoholic solutions containing at least 70% alcohol can also be used.
"The best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is not to take risks," says Owyen. "These recommendations will help protect our equipment operators from exposure to the virus while working at high altitudes, and will help our customers, site managers, and fleet managers in their efforts to promote workplace safety."
