A DIY mask book was published on a staff bulletin board on Monday after some cleaners expressed concern about the lack of essential PPE.
A Heathrow source told The Sun: "This is absolutely ridiculous, employees have to get the right PPE .
"The cleaners work eight-hour shifts, so the terminal is cleaned 24 hours a day, flights come and go, they need protection. The cleaning company is handing out gloves, but they need more, we are in the middle of a global pandemic. "
They added, "Several employees told stories about the lack of masks. A few days later, a brochure appeared on the blackboard about how to make socks of your own. Personal. A shame."
The instruction manual states that wearing a sock is a "fun and easy" way of making a mask, and advises employees to wash their socks before they are converted into face masks.
The brochure also includes tips on how to cut and sew an old shirt on a face covering. A small or very small shirt is better.
The lower part of the manual indicates that the company "does not support a particular method and that other instructions are generally available online".
It is believed that more than 100 caretakers work 24 hours a day to keep Heathrow Terminal 5 clean for the passengers.
Cleaners are hired from Mitie Cleaning Services at the airport.
