How do I change a diaper?

Of course, many people grow up with much younger siblings or cousins, or babysitting as a teenager or have friends who have babies or are near babies. For these people, changing a diaper may seem obvious. But there are people like me and my husband who never did that and changed our first diapers with our own newborn son.

It is stressful to be a new parent and to expect to have that immediate instinct for maternal or paternal instinct and also to know how to change a diaper. It's one of those things that seems very obvious afterwards, but at first it seems very confusing. First I will tell you how to change a diaper. Next, I'll show you how to change a diaper. And then you know how to change a diaper.

Step 1: Place the baby on a clean, smooth surface. When the surface is raised, tie it up and always hold a hand or very close to it, even if it is not yet rolling (this first version can really surprise you).

Step 2: Remove the layer of dirt, then follow these strategic tips What to expect :

For a wet diaper: fold the dirty diaper under the baby (so that the clean outside is now under his buttocks) and clean the area.

For a poopy layer: clean the layer yourself as much as possible and then fold it underneath as above. Raise the legs and clean the front of the baby well with warm water or towels. Make sure that you penetrate all wrinkles. Then lift both legs and gently wipe the baby's bottom.

During this step, keep the following in mind:

  • You should always clean the girls from side to side.

  • Boys can swipe from side to side, but you should keep the penis covered with an extra layer or a clean cloth to avoid a swelling situation.

  • You should also point the penis down when putting on the clean diaper to reduce leakage.

Step 3: Once the baby is clean and dry (and may have applied rash creams), slide the clean diaper under the baby's bottom. If you wear disposable diapers, the safety tabs go under the baby again. Pull the front of the diaper down between the baby's legs and place the tabs on the stomach from back to front.

The diaper should be tight enough to prevent leakage, but not so tight as to cause irritation. (If you see red spots the next time you change diapers, you know it was too tight.)

Okay, now we see the real diaper changes in action, okay? (This is not a specific confirmation of the Pampers brand, but an allusion to their diaper-changing abilities.)

With disposable diapers, I've always liked to fold them and squeeze the flaps tightly (as shown in the video) to make the dirty diaper more compact and less messy. See this complete guide for cleaning tips .
