LANSING, MI - Michigan residents must cover their faces by entering a grocery store or pharmacy by May 30.
This requirement is part of a decree signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Saturday, May 2, which extends existing security measures to protect consumers and employees from the spread of the coronavirus in supermarkets and pharmacies.
The mandate not only instructs customers to wear face masks, but also requires grocery stores and pharmacies to shop at least two hours a week for vulnerable groups by May 30.
The state defines vulnerable groups as people over the age of 60, pregnant women and people with chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and lung diseases.
The additional guidelines, which were expanded as part of the order, require companies to notify all of their employees if an employee evaluates COVID-19 positively. It also extends the temporary easing of regulatory requirements for food sellers and pharmacies.
The new mandate is an extension of Executive Decree 2020-60, which was in effect until May 22.

"We must continue to protect the health and safety of the consumers and employees of our supermarkets and pharmacies, who we have more than ever in this unprecedented public health crisis," said Whitmer in a statement. The order affects all grocery stores, including supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants that sell food or takeaways, and all other companies that sell food, as mandated. .
Further requirements for food businesses that have been expanded in Executive Decree 2020-71 are:
