Protective masks have suddenly become an integral part of our daily wardrobe. In return, we wonder how we can best clean them. Can you just throw them in the washer and dryer like a pair of socks or do you need to care for them as a more sensitive product? What water temperature does the mask clean? If you wear a mask every day to prevent the virus from spreading and contracting, you want it to be hygienic. Not to forget that with rising temperatures and sweats, the scourge of clogged pores and the "pet" (rashes caused by masks and cheeks) are always nearby. To find out how we can keep our masks in their best and cleanest form, we contacted three doctors to hear your thoughts. Below are tips for washing masks and the products you have on hand for cleaning.
Clean your mask
First, all the doctors we spoke to agreed that the mask should be washed daily. "We recommend cleaning the mask at least once a day," says Dr. Lindsey Gottlieb , director of infection prevention at Mount Sinai Morningside. "One reason to clean it more than it would be if it were really wet or dirty before the end of the day, for example if it sneezes and gets visibly wet, or if for some reason you walk on something that sprays outside I clean it earlier otherwise every day should be enough. " Dr. Elizabeth Mullans , a dermatologist at Uptown Dermatology in Houston, agrees: "If someone runs, goes home and doesn't go out, I recommend washing the mask when I'm back," he said. . "If you do multiple errands at the same time, don't wear different masks in every store. Just wash them when you're done shopping for the day." Gottlieb suggests having some cotton masks at home. So if you forget to wash your mask at the end of the day (or if you don't want to), you'll have a clean ready.
Precautions should also be taken when removing the mask. Janet Haas , director of epidemiology at Lenox Hill Hospital, told us after wearing the mask outdoors, "The fabric of the mask should be considered contaminated and you should avoid touching it when you remove the mask, on the straps or Handle earrings Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use a disinfectant after handling the mask you've used. "
"Washing a mask by hand or with a machine is fine," says Gottlieb. "Something to remember about this corona is that most detergents kill them fairly easily, so the most important thing is just to do the cleaning , the exact procedure isn't that important." Gottlieb says when you wash the mask in a washing machine , every standard detergent is fine. "You don't have to buy one that has special requirements. Something like Tide, which is sold in your local pharmacy, should be enough," she says. Regardless of whether it is washed by hand or in a machine, he suggests using warm water for heating. "The hotter the water, the more effective it is to kill organisms like this virus."
If your skin is sensitive, Mullans recommends using a milder cleanser. "Fragrant detergents can leave residues on the fabric that can cause a rash even on people with sensitive skin ," she says. "Use a hypoallergenic cleanser. Arm and Hammer Sensitive Skin Free and Clear is excellent because it doesn't contain fragrances either." (If you are prone to rashes, recommend washing your face twice a day before and after using the mask "Acne-prone people can benefit from cleansers that contain salicylic acid," she said. Moisturizers and makeup in areas covered by the mask, and only use non-comedogenic products.
There are several ways to wash your mask in the sink. Haas emphasizes the CDC's recommendation to wash hands, namely to produce a bleaching solution. "When you wash your hands, use a disinfectant bleach (the safe color bleach may not have disinfectant properties) and make sure they haven't expired," he says. "Soak the mask in a bleaching solution (four teaspoons of bleach per liter of water) for five minutes and then rinse thoroughly with warm or cold water."
If you don't have a bleach at home or prefer not to use it, Gottlieb says: "To be honest, any type of detergent for washing your hands should also work." You can even use hand soap , but the detergent will likely help the mask last longer. "The detergent is more about maintaining the fabric so that it lasts over time," says Gottlieb. "I don't know how well the cotton in the masks is resistant to hand soap. So I would try to buy something for the fabric." However, one cannot kill the virus better than the other. ""
When it was time to dry the mask, the doctors we spoke to said that you can either put it in the dryer at a high temperature or let it dry on the regular drying rack. "If you have a window with beautiful sunlight, you can pull it out of the window at any time so that it also gets a little sunshine," says Gottlieb. "However, I cannot say that I have seen data suggesting that exposure to the sun makes a difference [by killing germs]." Drying the mask is less urgent than first ensuring that it is clean. As Gottlieb says: "The most important thing is to put it in soap or bleach and to clean it."
