"The technology I've always used is simple," he explains to mbg. "Just rub a little alcohol on a cotton pad to clean the post and bracket." Simple, safe, but effective: alcohol is a cleaner, solvent (meaning it can dissolve deposits) and a disinfectant. So you can quickly and easily remove all residues and disinfect metal.
If you don't have alcohol by hand, Maker suggests another product-free solution: just boil hot water in a teapot and steam your jewelry. "This steam will help remove the dirt," he explains. Then you can put your pieces on a microfiber cloth to gently polish them. Keeping your jewelry shiny is another reason to clean it regularly, isn't it?
For decorative or costume earrings, Maker recommends using a dry toothbrush to gently loosen dirt or dust. If they look really boring, you can put a little drop of mild soap (like this baby soap ) and water on your toothbrush to help clean them better. If you add water to costume earrings, you need to dry these parts well. "If the jewelry is kept wet, it will discolour," says Maker.
