Maintaining your septic tank is important to maintain a healthy home for you and your family, but also for the environment. If not properly maintained, the sewage (liquids) and solids from your septic tank can enter our streams, wetlands, and rivers, where they can harm human health, wildlife, and the environment.
Here are some tips to help your sewage system work properly:
- Have your septic tank checked regularly.
- Pump your septic tank at least every three years or annually for households with household waste.
- Use biodegradable toilet paper that easily decomposes.
- Save water to limit the amount that gets into the tank.
- Never put grease or strong chemicals such as solvents, bleach, drain cleaners, pesticides, gasoline and paint in a sewer or toilet.
- Do not throw away non-biodegradable items such as dental floss, disposable diapers, cat litter, feminine hygiene products, handkerchiefs and cigarettes, drains or toilets.
- Do not build or pave in or near septic tanks or field pipes unless approved in accordance with national and local regulations.
- Avoid planting trees or shrubs in or near a septic tank or field lines.
- Do not place a garden in or near a septic tank or field lines.
- Call a septic tank company if your drains show signs of recoil or slow emptying.
Always remember: ONLY THE RAIN IN THE DRAIN
