Posted by beloved internet mom/grandma Babs Costello, affectionately known as Brunch With Babs on TikTok and Instagram, a recent video of loading a dishwasher has garnered over 6.5 million likes, views and many comments.
From cozy family recipes to everyday cleaning tips, Costello is taking social media by storm with all kinds of tips . In his article about loading a dishwasher, Costello started the video with his two very important don'ts, and his first piece of advice was quite controversial among fans.
loaded dishwasher
- "Scrape, don't wash" was his advice to remove leftover food from dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. "Not only are you saving water, but the detergent has something to cling to." That obviously got people talking.
- "Don't put things in the dishwasher that don't belong, like wooden objects or your good kitchen knives." These items must be hand washed, we agree.
From there, Costello went on his lengthy to-do list, some of which surprised viewers.
Two for loading the dishwasher:
- Fragile objects rise to the surface, gently nestle between the teeth, do not sit on them. Costello included small bowls in this group, adding that bulky utensils should be stored between cups and bowls.
- For our most prized product, the wine glasses, Costello has provided some great advice on charging. "For tall wine glasses, remember to lower the top basket before closing," he said in the video. "To lower your upper basket, just push (on the side bars) and push down."
- For the bottom shelf, Costello recommended tipping items toward the center for more efficient cleaning.
- When washing pots or pans, place them in front of the dishwasher.
- Knives should be placed sharp side down for safety, and forks and spoons can be stacked for easy unloading later.
- Finally, make sure the spray arms aren't clogged and you're good to go!
Like I said, this video sparked as much intrigue as a few raised eyebrows.
Some disagreed with advice about loading cutlery. Many reviewers have mentioned that depending on the utensil shelf, grouping spoons and forks together can make them cluttered and not as tidy. Another noted that placing spoons and forks handle-down when unloading might not be the most hygienic.
Of course, the most controversial point was not washing the dishes before loading them. Many have noticed that they don't use their dishwasher every day, so rinsing is necessary to ensure proper cleaning. Others have responded by saying that a lack of pre-rinse can leave an odd smell no matter what detergent they use.
According to Ashley Iredale, an expert at independent consumer group Choice, pre-rinsing is not only unnecessary, it can also leave dishes less clean. "If you prewash everything your dishwasher will think your dishes are cleaner than they really are, so they won't wash as hard and could actually be dirtier, " Iredale told The Guardian . In fact, most modern dishwashers have built-in sensors that measure the amount of dirt detected during the first rinse. Who knows?
Everyone has different washing habits and equipment, but maybe you've learned a few things you should (or shouldn't) do for future use.
