With an in-ear design, AirPods Pro (Gen 1 and 2) can get dirty quicker than AirPods. But cleaning is pretty easy once you know what to avoid and what materials/tools are best. Read on to find out how to clean your AirPods Pro and charging case with dos and don'ts.
The steps below work for both AirPods and AirPods Pro, but we'll cover some of the details of the latter, with its detachable tips and in-ear design.
How to clean dirty AirPods Pro and charging case
Clean AirPods Pro NO
- Do not use AirPods Pro or the charging case underwater
- Do not use any sharp or abrasive tools, materials or cleaning agents.
- Do not place water or objects in the charging case or charging contacts.
The best materials and tools to clean AirPods Pro?
Clean the AirPods Pro earbuds
- Clean your AirPods Pro with a clean microfiber cloth
- If necessary, lightly dampen your cloth with fresh water.
- Apple says it 's okay to use Clorox wipes or a similar 70% isopropyl/ethyl alcohol on AirPods/AirPods Pro
- Be sure to let them dry completely before putting them back in the charging case or on your ears.
- Remove some excess cotton from one end for a more precise swab.
- Gently use a toothpick to break off hard-to-reach areas; Be careful not to puncture the grilles, pads, or other vital components.
- Blue Tack is another great way to remove dirt and grime from black speaker grilles.
Clean the AirPods Pro tips
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth or cotton swab to wipe the outside
- To clean them thoroughly, pull firmly on the silicone tips to remove them.
- Rinse them off with fresh water (Apple says you should skip the soap and other cleaning products)
- Dry them with your clean towel
- Blue Tack can be used to clean speaker grills once you have removed the earbuds
- Slide them back into place until you hear a click (make sure the oval shape aligns).
AirPods Pro charging case
- Use a clean, dry cloth to clean your AirPods Pro charging case
- If necessary, lightly dampen the cloth with isopropyl alcohol or use a Clorox cloth
- Be careful not to spill liquids or other objects into the charging port/contacts
- Blue Tack is again a great way to remove dirt and grime from the outside and inside of the charging case.
Dirt in your charging case?
If you find dirt or debris near the charging contacts of your charging case:
- You can try a manual air blower before trying canned compressed air .
- It's ideal not to glue anything to the charging contacts to avoid damage, but you can gently test with a toothpick or cotton swab if you'd like.
