SAN FRANCISCO - ( BUSINESS WIRE ) - As millions of Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) customers prepare for Thanksgiving Day, there are some ways to absorb energy savings and act as a safety garnish on turkey that day.
"The holiday season may be different this year due to the pandemic. We want to help our customers consider the safety of electricity and gas as well as ways to reduce energy costs. We hope everyone will find time to safely enjoy this special time of year, whether they're meeting up with a small immediate family group or going online virtually, "said Laurie Giammona, PG&E Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer.
PG&E gives these simple tips for guests enjoying the vacation:
- Start with a clean oven to reduce the risk of a grease fire and cook more palatable foods on this vacation. If the cleansing starts early, there is less to do after you eat.
- Once the turkey starts to cook, keep the oven door closed . Reduce the power consumption of your oven by using the oven lights to check food instead of opening the door. This will help maintain the correct temperature and minimize heating of the oven.
- Use the stove instead of the oven because cooking on the stove uses less energy. Also, plan for side dishes that can be cooked at the same time as the turkey, which will reduce oven uptime. Use the microwave to reheat or cook small portions. This is also good advice for guests enjoying a vegetarian feast.
- Install a dimmer for the dining room lamp. If you reduce the brightness of a lightbulb by 10%, the life of the lightbulb can be doubled. Keep out the light in unused rooms.
- Use a dishwasher and scrape the dishes instead of rinsing them in hot water to save energy and money. Wait until there is a full load before starting the dishwasher. Make sure the device is stopped before the heat drying cycle. Open the door and let your dishes air dry.
Fire safety is vital on Thanksgiving as it is the main day for fires in the home kitchen, especially when frying food. Turkey deep fryers can tip over easily if hot oil is spilled over a large area. Customers should only use turkey fryers outdoors on a firm, level surface, away from flammable objects.
PG&E also urges customers to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local guidelines to help protect communities from COVID-19 during the holidays. Wear a mask in public places, avoid close contact by staying at least 6 feet (about 2 arms) away from people who do not come from the same household, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
