The summer was about improving the exterior of the house. Now that the colder weather has come, you can get your chores done.
Check the water hoses on the back of your washing machine. They need to be replaced every five years. And if they look brittle, replace them with a braided stainless steel version.
Once a year, clean your dryer thoroughly by cleaning the air duct and hole on the back with a vacuum cleaner and a dryer duct brush. Additionally, cleaning lint from the dryer can help the machine run more efficiently and clothes dry better. In addition, cleaning channels can help prevent a dryer fire.
Treat your doors by looking for loose hinges and thumbscrews. If the screws are just spinning in their holes, remove them and follow this contractor's instructions: coat two or three toothpicks with wood glue, then slide them into the screw hole. You can break the protruding ends. Let the toothpicks dry and tighten the screws.
You can fix your shower in the bathroom. A clogged shower head is most likely the result of mineral build-up in hard water. To clear the clog, remove the shower head and let it sit over a bowl of distilled vinegar for an hour. Then clean it with a sponge.
Use a bleach pencil for dirty grout and caulking. Rub the tip, then rinse or wipe.
If you find that the bleach doesn't remove all of the stubborn stains, it may be time to glow or even recoat the tiles. Caulking is a simple task that you can do in an hour or two. But grouting between tiles is usually a task that is best left to professionals.
If you want to clean your windows, Consumer Reports recommends that you check your window manufacturer's website for instructions beforehand. CR testing has shown that some windows can get dirty or scratched if the wrong type of cleaner is used. This includes some ammonia based formulas and some Windex products. You can watch a short video on window cleaning on our website.
