A dishwasher is a lifesaver when it comes to cleaning, but it can be expensive to run.

A cleaning expert has found a way to make his own dishwasher tablets that cost just 1 cent each, while the brands available in the supermarket cost between 8 and 14 cents or even more.

The woman who posts @ mrs.d.cleaning.reviews on Instagram stated that she uses baking soda, citric acid and liquid laundry detergent to make her homemade tablets.

Although this is an adaptation of a recipe used by others and she says she likes it, one cleaning company has since said they wouldn't recommend the method.

Ms. D started by adding a cup of baking soda and a quarter cup of citric acid (available in the cleaning hallways) to a bowl and mixing them together.

Then she added a tablespoon of dish soap to the mixture and stirred it.

Once it was well combined, he squeezed the mixture into the silicone ice cube molds.

Ms. D warns that the tablets will take at least four hours to set, but it is best to let them sit overnight. Then he takes them out of the mold and stores them in an airtight container.

While Ms. D said it worked well for her, one of the brands that make citric acid cautioned they back the recipe and recommends sticking with store-bought items.

Dri-Pak said, "These recipes are almost always made by non-chemists. Sometimes this is obvious because they recommend combining acids and bases in the same recipe, which just doesn't make sense.

`` Problems with these homemade recipes may not be instantly apparent and actually seem to work well at first, but chances are you'll save them later. ''

He added that the dishwashing liquid was not intended for use in the dishwasher and it could create foam on the floor.
