Airbnb ( ABNB ) was originally a cheaper hosting platform than a hotel, but as higher prices and lengthy payment tasks become more common, customers are at risk of walking away.
As a result, the condo rental platform is addressing these concerns by offering more clarity around pricing and cleaning policies.
"You shouldn't have to clean the house when you go out," Airbnb CEO Chesky told Yahoo Finance Live (video above). We set new standards. And anything a host asks for, we want to make sure it's listed beforehand, so you know what you're getting into before you book."
The new guidelines come after dozens of travelers booking through the platform complained about unreasonable cleaning requests from hosts despite paying hefty cleaning fees.
Now there may finally be a standard for the types of tasks Airbnb hosts can require of guests before they leave, a positive development for guests who may consider the requirements when deciding to book a hotel stay or accommodation .
"A reasonable task is to lock the door when you leave, turn off the thermostat, maybe not leave food in the kitchen if the host can't return for a few days because animals can get in," Chesky explained. . "But an unreasonable task is like stripping the bed and doing the laundry."
Chesky has also committed to making pricing more transparent. As part of the winter 2022 launch , Airbnb has announced that it will display full prices in advance.
For the third quarter, Airbnb's most profitable quarter in history, the company said the average daily rate was $156.
"We must remain affordable, especially now, because affordability is more important than ever in this economic environment," Chesky said.
Expedia, which acquired home rental company Vrbo as part of its 2015 acquisition of HomeAway , has taken similar steps to show customers who book a stay the full cost.
"It's not just about transparency so that everything is beautiful for everyone," Expedia CEO Peter Kern said in an interview with Yahoo Finance Live . "It's really about customers getting what they expect and getting what they pay for."
