Washing machines need regular cleaning to stay fresh, and Hinch fans have shown how to make their machine shine with a common household item.
The unit can harbor black mold due to moisture build-up and often requires thorough cleaning. If ignored, the spores can cause clothes to smell musty.
One part of the machine that's particularly bad for mold growth is the detergent drawer, and that cramped space can be difficult to clean, reports the Express .
If you want your washing machine drawer to shine again but don't feel like dazzling with disposables, cleaning geeks have shared their favorite solution: a dishwasher tab.
On a Facebook page featuring Ms Hinch's cleaning tips, the influencer's fans offered help after a woman searched online for tips on how to remove mold from her washing machine drawer.
She wrote: "I was thinking about cleaning out the washing machine drawer. It is currently being soaked in hot water and washing machine detergent but the mildew is tough enough to flake off. Any suggestions?"
At first glance, your washing machine drawer might not look so bad after all. However, once you pull out the drawer and take a closer look, you'll find more soap scum and detergent build-up than you might expect.
Clean freaks were quick to respond, with several urging the woman to take out the drawer and soak it in a pan of boiling water and a dishwasher tablet, or wash it hot with the powder tablet.
One commented: "I found the best way to clean drawers with embedded mold is to put a cheap dishwasher tablet in the drawer and set the wash to 90. That should be nice and clean when you look at it. No need to scrub and amazing results.
Another said: "I always see so many tips recommending expensive cleaning products and hot water works the same way. You may need to add a dishwasher tab, but it's pretty much free and the easiest way.
One person advised: "Take the drawer out of your washing machine and place it in your sink or in a bowl filled with hot water and a dishwasher tablet. Leave it for a few hours, it would be better overnight, and the mold will have dissolved.
There are many reasons why mold can grow in your washing machine drawer, including too much detergent, which can lead to soap scum that can stick and turn into mold.
Even regular washing at temperatures below 40 degrees can leave residue, which makes it easier for mold and dirt to grow. Mold in the washing machine drawer is not only unsightly, it can also invade the washing machine and imprint itself on the laundry in the drum.
This can cause your machine and clothes to smell musty and moldy; So if you've noticed this smell appearing after a trip, you're probably dealing with a mild mold problem.
Regular cleaning and cleaning of this compartment is crucial to stopping mold. The longer the surface remains unplastered, the greater the mold growth.
One person suggested: "For my drawer, I took them out and soaked them in hot water with a dishwasher tab. Leave on for about an hour and then rinse. It's like new now.
Another replied: "Put a dishwasher tablet in a 90C wash with a dishwasher tablet in it. Then once a month add white vinegar or soda crystals to the drum and wash at 90 degrees.
One wrote: "You should be able to pull the giveaway back it's adding up fast. Also, I started putting two dishwasher tabs in the drum and washing them in hot water. It's OK. It cleans everything inside and it smells nice.
Another commented: "I put a dishwasher tablet in my washing machine once a month at 40c which breaks down all the limescale that has built up around the seal and in the pipes and gives it a fresh smell. »
Dishwasher tabs are designed to fight hard water, remove stains and dissolve grease, so it's not surprising that they can be used to clean things outside of the dishwasher.
A pack of 30 dishwasher tabs can be bought from Asda for £1.34. This equates to 4p per tablet. This cleaner is also available in other major supermarkets including Sainsbury's and Tesco.
To keep washing machines from getting moldy, Hinch's fans suggested leaving the drawer open. One said: "Always leave your washing machine drawer open as often as you can. This will help with a lot less mold and dirt.
