5 things people *always* clean kitchens, and it only takes a few minutes

Keeping our kitchens clean can seem like a daily (or hourly) struggle. We recently cleaned up the breakfast mess, do we need to make another one for lunch and then another for dinner? And the cycle goes on, almost every day.

It may seem exhausting, but like most things in life, taking care of our kitchens is often better than letting the space become too overwhelming. And that often means doing small chores each day to maintain a space that feels functional.

But what tasks are essential to keep a kitchen always clean (well, at least 90% of the time)? We spoke to cleaning experts who shared what people who almost *always* have a clean kitchen do, and luckily their kitchen cleaning tips only take a few minutes.

1. They clean and put away while the food is cooking

Whether you're waiting on the stovetop or in the oven, there's usually at least a few minutes of downtime during the cooking process, and one of the best kitchen cleaning tips is to make sure you take advantage of those precious minutes.

"If you're reheating food that doesn't require your full attention, try using the time to tidy a surface, put away dishes, or wipe down a counter," suggests Emily Barron, cleaning expert, Property Rescue (Opens in a new tab) . "Small and often is the key to a clean kitchen."

2. They don't fester spills.

Hands up: who else has spilled something on the kitchen counter and left it for the future? If you want a kitchen that always stays clean, maybe it's time to change those habits.

"Use some of the best cleaning products and clean up spills as they happen. For example, if you spill tea or coffee, wipe it up immediately ," advises cleaning, decluttering, and organizing expert Heidi Phillips (opens in a new tab) .

Not only will your kitchen be cleaned more often, but you will also save yourself even more tedious work later on. "If you don't do that, it ends up being difficult and it takes forever to get down, which takes longer here and there instead of seconds," recalled Heidi.

3. They attack the soil daily

The floor is one of the easiest parts of our kitchen to neglect, but Property Rescue's Emily says regular maintenance will help you achieve your goal of consistent cleaning.

"Sweeping the floor every day may seem easy. but many of us push our floors to the bottom of the list. Take a minute or two to sweep every morning or evening, and you'll have a brand new kitchen to step into next time you have to leave. Or, if you prefer, send in one of the best vacuum cleaners out there .

4. They don't create clutter.

How many times have you left things out in your kitchen that don't really live there? If it's happening more times than you can count, it might be stopping you from having a clean kitchen all the time. After all , organizing tips are the key to order.

"The basic rule is not to use the kitchen as a rubbish dump," says professional organizer Heidi. "If you have school mail/letters etc. deal with them daily. Don't stack them on the counter to accumulate.

5. They clean the sink every day.

The sink is perhaps the dirtiest area in our kitchens (other than countertops) every day. The people whose kitchens are always clean make sure that this area is clean and tidy every day, yes sir.

"Don't let the dishes pile up," advises cleaning expert Laura Mountford (opens in new tab) . "Solve them by doing the dishes after every meal (yes, really) or by stacking the dishwasher."

"Save her as soon as possible," agrees Heidi. "A bare dish drainer looks great and will instantly organize your kitchen."

After that, the kitchen sink should be cleaned quickly every day, "because water can collect and sticky leftovers can also hide". Also check out our guide to cleaning a stainless steel sink to give it that final shine.
