'Controversial' interior trend of the 1920s 'We'll see a lot of this in 2023' - Daily Express

Interior design trends are always changing, but apart from welcoming new features, style is often cyclical. Brie Turton is an interior designer who shares tips, advice and ideas on her page @studiobrie . She says a trend that started 100 years ago is about to make a comeback, although not everyone is happy about it.

Brie shared a video detailing "interior design trends we'll see many of in 2023" on her TikTok page, which received nearly 3,000 likes.

She explained, "I think [that] is the most controversial, love it or hate it and it's a glass block. Glass block or glass block, whatever you call it, was originally popular in the 1920s-1940s and is coming back now."

As the name suggests, the glass block is an architectural element made of glass. The appearance of the glass blocks can vary in colour, size and structure and can be integrated into the architecture or interior of the house as a room divider or decorative element.

One of the most classic examples of the use of glass bricks to let natural light through a unique architectural feature is the facade of the Maison de Verre, a glass-walled building that opened in Paris in 1932.

As for the furniture, the designers took inspiration from placing glass blocks in the bars to form the base of sofas, coffee tables and breakfast counters.

Glass blocks are not only used to allow more light to shine through the home, but can also be incorporated into your outdoor space.

Sections of glass block or brick can be used to visually break up the dark patio materials and make the space appear brighter, or you can use them to build a wall that can divide parts of your garden.

Although the trend can be worn in many ways, not everyone is a fan of it. In the comments section of Brie's video, TikTok users shared their thoughts on their indoor trend predictions. "No, glass blocks," said a user named Johanna. Another named Stephanie added: "I was about to say that! My girlfriend's parents oddly put it in their 2005 version and it dates from then. Maybe they were ahead of the trend."

Another commenter said, "Definitely not on the glass block." However, some people were excited by the prospect. Gigi said: "The glass block is so '80s Miami Vice. I love him."

An anonymous commenter added, "I would never have gone for the glass block, but I think you're right."
