The spring floods are not unknown in the river cities, and Missipissi has reached its historic rhythm, reaching a maximum of 21 feet, making it the ninth record. As the floodwaters begin to disperse, residents of Dubuque County often know that floods can cause damage to homes and businesses, but they do not realize what damage they can cause to their health.
According to Patrice Lambert, health expert in the district of Dubuque, cleaning after a flood can pose an infection risk.
"If people are not careful near water or have a scratch on their hands or legs or anywhere on their bodies, they can become infected when they flood."
Here are some simple rules for cleaning and disinfecting items after a flood:
- Make sure the item is in good condition. Broken, cracked, broken objects, etc. It must be discarded and replaced.
- For cleaning soaked in flood water and porous objects (such as bedding, clothing, stuffed animals, etc.)
• Place objects in cold water before washing them with the machine to remove mud and dirt. DO NOT dip the washing machine, otherwise it may be damaged. Curtains, blankets, carpets and other items can be hung on a rope and washed to remove mud and dirt.
• Use hot water and detergents to wash items. Be careful not to overload the washing machine.
• Add 1 cup of bleach with liquid chlorine for front loader washers - Large porous objects such as cushioned garden furniture, carpets, etc. Those who have been soaked in flooded water MUST be discarded.
- For cleaning solid objects (which do not absorb water) such as concrete or vinyl plates, plastic toys for playgrounds, frames, etc.
- Prepare a bleach solution according to the manufacturer's instructions and disinfectant instructions.
