Anyone with a pair bought suede shoes , know how much they easily and quickly defile and pollute can. Fortunately, the cleaning lab of the Good Housekeeping Institute has some tips and tricks to help you maintain the original look.
How to protect suede shoes.
Do not wait until a task is executed! Prevention is the key. Spray suede (real or fake) with a product like Kiwi Suede Protector before using your shoes for the first time to protect them from dirt and water stains.
Be sure to read the instructions before applying, and first test a small hidden area to make sure it leaves no unwanted marks. Use a suede brush to gently rub off suede shoes after use to remove dust before storage.
To clean suede shoes damaged by water.
If it rains, choose another pair of shoes. If you fall into a downpour with suede boots, remove them immediately and always allow them to dry naturally. Never leave the dryer or place it near the radiator when it is wet. The heat can shrink, fade or deform.
Dry excess water with a clean towel. Insert shoe trees , if any, or fill your shoes with white paper towels and place overnight in a dry, well-ventilated place to dry. After drying, give them a light brush to restore the nap.
To remove stains from suede shoes.
Remove fresh stains immediately with a paper towel . Sprinkle with baking soda and let it dry overnight. Remove the dust and any remaining stains with a sandpaper board the next day or try a product like Kiwi Suede Cleaner .
If you are dealing with a dry stain , first try to brush or gently remove the stain. You can use a toothbrush if it is pinched, or choose a special suede brush . If the deer gets tangled, lightly spray the area for a few seconds and then take a nap with the sandpaper or brush . You can also try , a paste on the stain to knead and to remove it.
The most important thing is to be careful: brush only in the direction of the fibers, not back and forth, otherwise the buffing may be further damaged.
In case of a defect bring your suede shoes to the workshop and ask if they can be cleaned and restored. We know it's a bit complicated, but if you like your shoes, give them the finishing touch they need. It will be worthwhile (and it is sustainable !).
