JACKSON, Tennessee - According to the Tennessee Department of Health, 10 children died of the flu this season in Tennessee, one of them in West Tennessee.
Now the school districts of the region are closing.
As the flu season continues, there are a few things to watch out for.
Closed spaces, common areas and lots of children.
"[Schools] are small germ factories. I've said it before, so it's hard. You are in such close contact. They don't think about getting sick or what to do to stay healthy. So it's up to us to give good examples, "said Shanna Wilbanks, epidemiologist at the Jackson-Madison County Health Department.
Health officials warn that this flu season is bad.
In addition to a flu shot, you can take other precautions to stay healthy.
"Be sure not only to constantly disinfect our areas in the event of the flu, but also to keep the things we use always clean," said Wilbanks.
While it's important to pay attention to the things your kids take home, it's even more important to pay attention to the classrooms as they can be full of germs.
"Every common surface will be a kind of germ zone. They know how the light switches children are responsible for when they leave another classroom, desk, or pencil sharpener, "said Wilbanks.
In addition to cleaning with an approved cleaning agent, pay attention to your surroundings.
"Especially if you have met someone with confirmed flu or a flu-like illness, please take care of yourself. If you experience flu symptoms, it is recommended that you speak to your doctor, who may be able to give you antiviral medication. This reduces the course of the disease and prevents more serious complications from the flu.
Ministry of Health officials remind us that there is still time to get a flu shot.
