The local fire chief advises during the forest fire awareness week

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - In sunny skies and warmer weather, this week is reserved to raise awareness of forest fires.

Humans cause 95% of forest fires in the United States.

"We had poorly maintained chainsaw fires, lawnmowers hitting rocks," said Doug Schmitt, the fire chief of the soldier town.

He said at the time that northeastern Kansas was at greater risk.

"As soon as we go through this winter until spring, when everything turns green, it will be a bit safer," said Schmitt.

Governor Laura Kelly organized the forest fire awareness week from February 3rd to 7th last month.

Schmitt said it was to reduce the risk of forest fires and their possible effects.

"Cleaning around the house and creating a defensible space, cleaning some of the bushes and landscaping away from the house and keeping things cut" was some of his advice.

He said: "Ultimately, there seem to be areas in the neighborhoods that are not maintained, such as between houses, some common areas in their neighborhoods, and if we could look at them and regroup them and help them clean them up, that would be helpful . "

Controlled burns are an important part of maintaining healthy meadows in Kansas, but should also be monitored.

"Pay special attention to the weather forecast for the entire period of the fire so that you are not surprised," said Schmitt.
