Your AirPods are clogged with ear wax. How to clean them

You will likely use your AirPods every day (or nearby). But how often do you clean them? The options are not that common, if not none at all.

However, it is important that you clean your AirPods regularly. First, because you spent a lot of money on these little white headphones, you don't want to waste money just because you didn't care about them. Second, most importantly, because your AirPods can become clogged with ear wax while remaining in your ears for hours. "Headphones not only carry dirt and bacteria, but can also increase the build-up of ear wax," said the Whittier Hospital on its website . "Since our ears are designed for cleaning, the use of headphones can intercept the ear wax that is supposed to be made." Yuck

How can you clean the AirPods (or AirPods Pro ) without damaging them? And how often should you really do it? We ask our editor and AirPod scholar TJ Donegan for his best advice.

According to TJ, cleaning your AirPods is fairly easy as long as you are careful. "It's best to use a cotton swab and 99% isopropyl alcohol, which evaporates almost immediately," he recommends. "It works great with AirPods Pro (remove the tips and clean them separately) and all plastic AirPods and most other electronic devices." Apple also recommends cleaning the AirPods with a "soft, dry, lint-free cloth" on its website .

And what not to do? Never (and we never mean) use water. "Water can easily penetrate inside and short-circuit the electronics, especially since every outbreak has its own battery (AirPods Pro waterproof should also be handled with care)," warns TJ.

Don't forget to clean the case too.

No matter how clean your AirPods are when your storage is dirty. And yes, it also needs to be cleaned. Because even if your case contains no ear wax, it contains bacteria and dirt from everyday use. Apple recommends using a soft cloth with isopropyl alcohol to clean it. However, make sure that no liquid gets into the loading openings and never use abrasive cleaners that could damage the parts.

How often should you clean your AirPods?

As with most things, it all depends on how often you use them and how dirty they are. However, a good rule of thumb is every or every other week. "If your ears are clean enough and you put them in the bag, you should clean them at most once a week," says TJ.
