Students can't clean their room, but with a little help and a good cause, they can clean an entire street.
Sophia Charter began in 2020 with the aim of continuously improving the safety and wellbeing of students at the University of Otago following the tragic death of Sophia Crestani at a student apartment party in 2019. After the tragedy, the police joined Sophia. family and many other interested parties. to sign the Sophia Charter and continue to work hard with our partners to achieve their common goals.
Introducing Charter, one of Sophia's closest friends said, "The purpose of The Charter isn't to change student culture or stop the fun, it's to work with students to make sure they have fun."
Otago Coastal Community Police officers recently took the opportunity to do just that, joining a large number of student volunteers in an organized clean-up of Castle Street in Dunedin's North Student Apartment District.
Castle Street is often the scene of large student parties, which lay waste to the street with bottles, broken glass and all sorts of rubbish.
At Sophia Charter North Dunedin's cleanup, student volunteers teamed up with Sophia Charter partner organizations to collect rubbish and sweep the street. Sleeves were rolled up, dumpsters organized, brooms and shovels distributed, garbage trucks brought in for an afternoon of intense cleanup.
Community Relations Coordinator, Agent Max Holt, was on hand to help and was pleased to see the students' turnout.
"It's good to see them here in such large numbers, in the spirit of what it means to them and in memory of Sophia."
