THE COST of keeping your car on the road can cause your bank balance to collapse.
According to a Green Flag survey, only one in six drivers is confident they can perform basic car maintenance, and only half would be able to add oil or check a tire's tread.
If more people knew how to perform these simple checks, along with other automotive knowledge, they could reduce their spending.
Here are my tips for limiting your car maintenance costs.
TAKE THE COURSE: Although you can find car care courses online (Wowcher offers one for just £9), there's nothing quite like getting your hands dirty with an in-person course. Check the list of courses at your local college, some of which are reserved for women.
THE PRESSURE IS OFF: One in six green flag alerts is due to tire or wheel problems. Just being able to check your tire pressure can help you avoid a costly trip to the shop and extend the life of your tires. Check your car's manual to see if it lists the correct pressure for your tire, and then use an air pump from a gas station to get the correct pressure.

TAP CAREFULLY - Tires have their own tread wear indicators, or you can use a quarter - if the outer band of the coin is visible when you place the coin in the groove between the bearings, it means they are too worn and need replacing. .
Regular inspections help you plan for future costs and buy new tires.

CHECK THE EXPERTS: For basic car maintenance tips, consult the experts online. Big troubleshooting companies have tips on their websites, and you can watch their videos online for step-by-step instructions.
COMPARE COVERAGE: We all know the big towing companies, but it was AXA and Start Rescue that launched the latest edition of Which? for Best Puncture Coverage, with AA in third place.
AT YOUR SERVICE: Specialized comparison sites can help you determine the cost of vehicle maintenance. A site like bookmygarage.com allows you to compare prices for MoTs and maintenance at nearby garages before making an online reservation.
