ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Spring is here and the Zanesville Fire Department is reminding residents to focus on spring cleaning.
With the recent increase in fires in the community, spring cleaning can help keep your home safe and potentially reduce house fires.
Trainee firefighter with the Zanesville Fire Department, Simon Wagner, said the first step in spring cleaning is to tidy up the house to reduce the risk of fire.
"When it comes to spring cleaning, there's a lot of vegetation outside, so you have dead vegetation around you that you might want to clean up," Wagner said. "Check your gutters, your pine needles and anything that might collect in them, and anything you're going to use, like anything you've stored up to your gas, you should check to see if your gas cans are good."
Wagner added that he will also check all wiring in the home and check for leaks in propane and gas grills to ensure there are no animal nests.
Wagner said if someone feels like they can't follow some of these spring cleaning tips, the fire department can always help.
"I think a lot of things happen that are inadvertently a result of human error. So if we can all go, be careful or if there's someone that we know might not, offer your hand because not everyone can walk your roof and check your gutters. Some people might have building supplies or weed plows and can't move them, so it's good to take care of your home as a community and go out and see if anyone needs help," Wagner said.
Other spring cleaning tips would be to keep building materials away from the house and to clean the dryer vents and lint screen.
