MARYLAND — There are only three weeks left to file your federal income tax returns, and many Maryland taxpayers have just filed them. You still have one day to address, prepare and file your tax returns.
Maryland has extended the state's filing deadline to July 15, according to the Court of Auditors.
While April 15 is usually a tax day, if that date falls on a weekend or holiday, it will be moved to the next business day. Tax day is postponed to 2022 as April 15 is Good Friday and Easter. This moves the deadline to the next business day, Monday April 18th.

The IRS said this week it will continue to process tax returns and provide refunds at an expedited rate for the current filing season . For the week ended March 25, the IRS issued nearly 58 million refunds worth nearly $189 billion. The average refund is $3,263.
Even with an extra weekend, the IRS is urging taxpayers not to wait until the last minute to file their taxes. And while taxpayers who need more time to pay their taxes can request an extension to their tax return, it doesn't give you more time to pay the taxes that are due. April 18th is still the deadline for any taxes you owe the government.

If you need more time to submit:
IRS Free File allows you to prepare and file your federal income taxes online using guided tax preparation, an IRS partner website, or fillable forms. It's safe, easy, and free to submit at the federal level.
As the Internal Revenue Service struggles with staffing shortages and backlogs, consumer advocates are urging taxpayers to file their 2021 tax returns as soon as possible before the April 18 deadline. You must also submit electronically.
The IRS says most refunds are issued in less than 21 days for taxpayers who filed electronically and chose direct deposit.
To check the status of a refund , taxpayers should use the Where's My Refund?" page. Tool at IRS.gov. Information for the most recent tax year is generally available within 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of the taxpayer's electronic return.
If you submit a paper declaration, you must wait four weeks before you can check the status.
Here are some emergency tips from the IRS:
Electronic Filing: IRS EFILE is available to all taxpayers and many can electronically file their individual tax returns free of charge. Last year nearly 100 million taxpayers chose this option to file their personal income tax returns.
Check Identification Numbers: Carefully check the identification numbers, usually social security numbers, of each person on the list. This includes you, your spouse, dependents, and those listed on applications for Child and Dependent Care Credit or Earned Income Tax Credit. Missing, incorrect, or illegible social security numbers can delay or reduce a tax refund.
Double- check your numbers: If you're submitting a paper return, double-check that you've correctly calculated your refund or the balance due.
Check tax tables: If you are filing electronically, the software will do this for you. If you are using free fillable forms or a paper declaration, verify that you have used the correct tax table number for your filing status.
Sign your form: You must sign and date your return. If you make a joint declaration, you and your spouse must sign it, even if only one of you had income. If you have paid someone to prepare your return, you will also need to sign it and enter your preparer's tax identification number.
Mail Your Report to the Correct Address: If you are mailing a report, find the correct mailing address at www.irs.gov .
Electronic Payment: Electronic payment options are convenient and secure methods of paying taxes. You can authorize an electronic withdrawal or use a credit or debit card.
Follow the instructions when sending a payment: Individuals sending a payment should make the U.S. Treasury Department check payable and attach it to their tax return or Form 1040-V, Payment, if applicable, without attaching it. The check must include the social security number of the person first listed on the statement, daytime phone number, tax year, and type of form submitted.
Filing or Extension of the Filing Deadline: You must file a statement or request an extension of the filing deadline before the April 18 deadline. Remember that an extension of the submission deadline does not mean an extension of the payment deadline.
