'Side effects': How to avoid 'irreversible damage' to washing clothes - Daily Express

Doing laundry is more than just throwing clothes in the washing machine and taking them out . It requires proper preparation, some amount of detergent and cleaning to keep the fabrics in pristine condition. If you're not careful, some washing mistakes can damage your clothes and reduce the efficiency of your washing machine. To avoid these problems, Blanc's laundry experts have shared various laundry mistakes and how to fix them.

Experts said: "With 11 million pieces of clothing ending up in landfill in the UK every week and 70% of the clothes we throw away show irreversible damage, it's pretty clear that laundry mistakes can cost the earth a lot more than we can imagine ."

They shared that washing and drying clothes at too high a temperature can often be a counterintuitive decision.

Washing and drying at too high a temperature can cause fibers to melt, shrink and increase wear and tear on clothing due to increased friction from intense heat.

Laundry experts said: "In the long term, this shortens the life of your clothes as they get damaged and then thrown away more quickly. Unfortunately, this is detrimental to both the planet and your wallet.

Wash in cold water instead, as most clothes can be washed at 30 degrees, which uses less energy and is gentler on the fibers of the clothes.

We've all done it before, but stains that may have long since become soaked into the fibers of the garment are much more difficult to remove and can leave streaks after cleaning.

If possible, soak or pre-dye the stain immediately, as this will help fade the stain from the garment and give you the best chance of removing it.

After pre-treating the stain, allow it to sit for a few minutes (or a few hours for particularly stubborn stains) before washing the garment on your normal cycle.

Rubbing a stain too hard can also damage clothing.

If you rub a stain too hard to fade it you can cause permanent damage to the fabric or fade the color which then cannot be restored.

Instead, soak the garment first to lighten the stain, then gently rub or blot with cool water and a stain remover.

For those who are nervous or unsure it is advisable to try this on a small area of the fabric that is not visible.

Another mistake is using too much detergent and pouring it directly onto your clothes.

It can be tempting to pour in detergent with a heavy hand, but more detergent doesn't mean cleaner clothes.

Experts explained: "Excess detergent can accumulate on fabrics and is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

"Similarly, pouring concentrated detergent directly onto the fabric does not give better results, in fact it can stain, whiten or discolour your clothes."

Instead, only use the amount stated on the detergent bottle and only use the recommended amount; non-biological cleaning agents are recommended.

Overloading the washing machine is easy to do considering it saves us time and energy.

However, this can result in clothes not being cleaned properly and possibly a broken washing machine.

Just leave a gap between the clothes and the top of the machine and don't fill them to the brim.
