As we adjust to warmer weather and the beauty of the new season, spring cleaning is just around the corner. Tidying up our homes gets even harder with pets, especially if you have a long haired cat or furry puppy that loves the great outdoors. Luckily, we have some spring cleaning tips to help you keep those dust bunnies in check!
Here shares Dr. Sarah Wooten, DVM and veterinary expert for Pumpkin Pet Insurance , shares her spring cleaning tips for catching excess fur and preventing outside debris from getting in.
Prevent dogs from following dirt.
"If you don't clean your dogs' paws before they come indoors after an outdoor walk, they can end up in the dirt," says Dr. Wooten. "Use dog wipes to clean their paws, which will also keep your floors and furniture clean!
"You can also trim or trim the hair at the bottom of the legs. This hair can be a magnet for dirt, grass seeds, and other unsightly things.
For handy wipes, we like Petkin's Cat and Dog Paw Wipes ( purchased from Chewy, $9.98 ). Or try these disposable bamboo baby wipes that are also safe for humans ( Buy them at Bim Bam Boo, $24.99 ).
Use indoor and outdoor rugs.
"These are especially good to place in front of the door to catch any dirt or water your pets might bring in," says Wooten.
"It's also a good idea to put them where your pet likes to lie down, like under the kitchen table or in front of the sink because they're easy to clean. The interior and exterior are therefore available in stylish colors and designs. They won't. You don't have to compromise on style.
For a budget-friendly option, try this multicolored handmade rug from the DII Chindi Home Collection ( buy on Amazon, $8.05 ).
Keep pet hair to a minimum.
"Brushing your pet with a grooming rake that removes dead hair can stop the problem before it starts," advises Wooten. "Plus, grooming your pet during shedding can remove a lot of extra hair. You can even run a lint roller over your pup or cat to pick up loose hair before it blows up!
"As if that wasn't enough, lint rollers are not only useful for clothing, but also for upholstery. Other options for furniture include handheld vacuums and blankets that can be easily washed.
"For hardwood floors, microfiber mops are ideal for quick use to pick up hair, dirt and crumbs. They're also cheaper than disposable towels because they can be washed and reused," adds Wooten.
Clean your pet's belongings regularly.
"Pet beds, collars, and toys absorb strong dog odors and can be a breeding ground for bacteria, yeast, and mold," says Wooten. "They tend to get wet and they stay there a lot, so they need to be cleaned regularly.
"You can put rubber toys in the top rack of the dishwasher (along with pet bowls) and most stuffed toys or bedding in the washing machine. And on a beautiful spring day, open the windows and let fresh air act as a deodorant!
Use non-toxic cleaning products.
"If you haven't already, switch to 'non-toxic' household cleaning products," says Wooten.
"Not only are they safer for you and your family, they're a lot safer for pets too. Many products contain ingredients that can be absorbed if swallowed, inhaled, or even through the skin if moved and licked. Even toilet cleaner shouldn't be toxic to those with dogs that drink from the toilet bowl!
For a non-toxic option, try Bean & Lily Floor Cleaner ( $13.29, Amazon ).
