Spring cleaning your car: how do you assess the condition of the tires?

Date of publication: 31st March 2019.

The hottest day and spring cleaning starts with the cold winter in April. For British drivers, this means that after the colder months you spend some time in the condition of your vehicle, which should include a full assessment of your tires.

Green Flag has issued common sense for the maintenance and replacement of tires that should be considered:

Tips for tire care

  • Check the tread of the tire: The tires are designed for traction on the road. If the profile is worn, your vehicle may slip on the road. Although the legal minimum tread limit is 1.6 mm, the Royal Society for Accident Prevention (RoSPA) recommends replacing the tires as soon as the tread reaches 3 mm. You can use a profile depth gauge or check your integrated wear indicators.
  • Check the tire pressure: The tires should inflate properly according to the instructions of your vehicle. Remember that the pressure must be increased when the vehicle is fully loaded. Over-inflated or over-inflated tires not only affect the ride and braking performance of your vehicle, but also reduce the life and can affect fuel efficiency. To do this, you can check your workshop when refueling or buying a tire pressure gauge.
  • Choose the best replacement tires: If you need to replace the tires, be aware that placing different types of tires on the same axle is not allowed as it will affect the handling of the vehicle. Stay with the same brand and do your homework before you install it.

Green Flag's Lucy Davies said: "Your tires are the point of contact between your car and the road, so it's important that you're in good shape." Tires based on worn, inflated or inflated tires, it is therefore important that the car owners take time to inspect them.

"Whether you're cleaning spring, replacing winter tires with summer tires, or just checking your wear, we all British riders should not underestimate the importance of tire safety."

change tires

  • Look for a Safe Breakpoint: Once you find your tire is flat, look for a secure stop on a flat, stable surface. If you are on a street, walk over your shoulder and wait for help as changing a tire is too dangerous.
  • Safety is paramount: Put on a safety vest and place a warning triangle that reflects the hazard behind the vehicle to prevent vehicles from driving in the opposite direction.
  • Prepare for work: Locate the spare wheel, jack, wheel support and wheel lock. They should all be under the floor of the trunk, under the car or in some SUVs in the back door.
  • No reservation If you can not find a spare wheel, your car can be equipped with a foam that can be injected through the valve into the tire. This is just a temporary solution to get home and you should change the tire as soon as possible.
  • Prepare the Wheel: To remove the tire and rim, loosen the wheel nuts with the adjustable wrench, but do not remove them yet. If you can not see the lug nuts, you may need to remove a cover first. If your vehicle is equipped with alloy wheels, one of the nuts can be locked, and a key adapted to the rail solves the problem.
  • Positioning the vehicle: Make sure that the parking brake is firmly engaged and engage the first gear. Find the lifting point in your vehicle manual and lift it with the jack so that the steering wheel with the flat tire lifts off the ground.
  • Remove the wheel: Now remove the wheel nuts completely and remove the wheel. If the wheel does not move, ask for help: By pushing and pulling the car can be removed from the jack.
  • Add the spare wheel: Lift the spare wheel into the hub, align the holes, and tighten the nuts until they are tightened by hand. If you are sure, lower the jack and tighten the wheel nuts with the wrench.
  • Remember: Check them twice to make sure they are not loose. Remember: If your vehicle is equipped with a compact spare wheel, your maximum speed and the number of kilometers driven will be limited.
