    Unpack your new weapon.

    Unpack your new weapon

Pistol owners should know that it is best to keep this shiny new pistol out of reach of a 100-round torture test. Seasoned shooters give out their new pistol once after taking it out of the box. Thorough cleaning is not required, but it is a good idea to remove any corrosion inhibitors provided by the manufacturer, as well as any small particles left over from the test shot. Author Glen Zediker shares his method of unboxing a new pistol in this article .

How often should a small bore rifle be cleaned?

How often should you clean your small bore rifle?

A .22 LR rifle brings its own nuances to maintenance. The late Lones Wigger had very strong feelings about cleaning small bore rifles, and luckily he shared his thoughts on how often a small bore rifle should be cleaned in this article (the answer is after each box of ammo). While reading the article has more details, this wigger anecdote sums it up.

"When I started shooting unacceptable groups from 100 meters away, I got up, cleaned the rifle, and went back to shoot two tight 10X groups, about a third the size of the groups I had fired. This is pretty compelling evidence that barrels need cleaning.

Clean your cleaning rods and use good quality plasters.

Real gun cleaning for real results

One overlooked aspect of gun maintenance is keeping the cleaning tools pristine. A dirty tool is not very effective. In this article, author Jim Shults gave a tip on how to keep cleaning rods clean and brush the bristles with brake cleaner spray and a paper towel. Repeat this process after each brushing.

Some shooters wear white, cropped shirts as patches. While it can be inexpensive, a better solution is to buy one of the many options offered by companies like Brownells and Hoppe's. Good gun cleaning plasters are more absorbent and wipe better than a T-shirt plaster. They're also quite inexpensive and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Clean the barrel of a compressed air gun?

    Maintenance of the air pistol

There is some debate about this question, but Scott Pilkington says in this article that the answer is simply no. Based on their findings, there was no real improvement in accuracy after cleaning the barrel of a compressed air gun.

"Air pistols don't generate real heat or dirty powder residue like guns. I've tested many air guns to determine the accuracy of the pellets and sometimes found one that doesn't shoot well. I've tried cleaning the keg to find improvement and it rarely helps.

    How to clean armories

Removing carbon deposits from the cannon chambers can be a laborious process. One way to save your arms is to grab your drill press and (carefully) stick a cleaning rod into it. Author Brad Miller shares his tips on this nifty way to keep the armory clean in this article . Remember, don't use this technique on your run.

Use Hoppe Foam Hole Cleaner on your M1 Garand.

    M1 Garand care tips

While this popular cleaner has a caveat to avoid use with guns equipped with a gas system, Hoppe's foam cleaner is relatively easy to remove from the M1 Garand rifle. In this article, author Frank Melloni describes how the foam cleans parts of the gas system as it expands through the gas connection and, if still attached, the gas cylinder.

"Most of the time, I fill the barrel with foam and let it sit while I put it on the floor. This gives you more time to work and at the same time the foam gets into the gas system and removes carbon debris. ""

Do not use steel for cleaning.

Top 5 cleaning tips to keep your gun pristine

There are many reasons to avoid using steel brushes or cleaning rods on your gun. For starters, steel can scratch surfaces and fade scratches on your barrel. Author Brad Miller recommends the use of brass brushes and cleaning rods as explained in this article . There he also gives some other tips on cleaning weapons. Brass is durable and efficient, but is smooth enough not to scratch steel, which makes it desirable for cleaning tools.

Cleaning frequency and precision of the caliber of the rifle.

How cleaning the opening affects accuracy

This classic advice comes from the June 1965 issue of American Rifleman magazine. In fact, it's more of an example of conflicting advice. In this article , author LF Moore shares his results after testing four rifles with 3,800 rounds. Contrary to Wigger's advice on cleaning small bore rifles above, Moore said, "Unless the rifle has been exposed to harsh weather conditions, it seems beneficial not to clean the rifle's bore. 22 Rimfire rarely. Tips for restaurants during Covid-19

As we all know, it wasn't long ago that restaurants were busy serving customers. Of course, food safety has been a part of the practice, but it may not be the first thing people think today.

A big change happened when the Covid-19 pandemic emerged, which completely changed the world of restaurants as we know it. All restaurants have been closed to prevent the pandemic from spreading. And only take-out services were allowed. Six weeks after the containment / closure, the restaurants were allowed to reopen, but with special requirements and instructions. And restaurants had to adapt to the necessary social distancing practices.

This pandemic situation has created a concern many share for their health without knowing whether it is now safe to order take-out or eat-in at the restaurants they visited prior to the pandemic.

In the pandemic, it is imperative that restaurants take greater account of food safety.

All food businesses are required to protect public health by complying with food safety regulations. According to the World Health Organization, there is so far no evidence of Covid-19 transmission through food or food packaging. However, coronavirus can survive on objects or surfaces. This is one of the many reasons why it is important to make sure your restaurant is as clean and safe as possible for your customers and employees.

Your customers are the heart of your business and the good news is that they want to guide you through this difficult time of social distancing. Communicating your food safety practices clearly and frequently will make them feel more secure ordering your meals from you.

Not only do you need to reassure your customers that you are doing everything you can to keep them safe, but you also need to make sure your employees feel safe at work. Your team needs to know they can rely on you to prioritize and manage their health during this crisis.

There is no question that doubling food safety will help limit the spread of disease. But it also makes social distancing a little less difficult for their community when they can still expect to eat at their favorite restaurants.

7 Food Safety Tips Restaurants Should Implement Now

    1. Send the staff home if they have symptoms

Food safety starts with the people who prepare and serve meals. You need to lead by example if your employees are to take the pandemic seriously. If any of your employees have symptoms of a cold, send them home. Also, check the recommendations from the Ministry of Health.

You can offer sick leave to your employees if your restaurant can.

You also need to make sure your employees know where to access Covid-19 information.

    2. Make hand washing mandatory

Forget about the extra hand washing. Now is the time to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds in various situations, including:

When the staff arrives at your restaurant

    They prepare between each order

    After touching common surfaces

After a meal or a smoke break

    After bathroom breaks

    After dealing with money

After cleaning the restaurant when they leave for the day

Fill your restaurant's hand washing stations with soap and make sure there are hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol available in different spots on the front and back of the house. Publish hand washing information posters and verbally remind staff every day that you hope everyone will improve their hand washing efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19.

    3. Limit your food handling

Personal hygiene is important to protect yourself from the coronavirus. However, you can do a little more by limiting the number of people handling food and food packaging in your restaurant. You may need to redesign your kitchen line flow, if possible, so that fewer staff are involved in meal preparation as long as you keep handling raw and cooked foods separately. Make sure the grocers are well trained in food safety tips and procedures. Perhaps now is the time to review what you learned when your employees received food handling training that includes personal hygiene, hygiene, food safety, and food temperature.

    4. Clean and then clean again

Before, during, and after your shifts, now is the time to step up your cleaning game. The exact survival time of the coronavirus on surfaces has not yet been confirmed. You should therefore clean the counters frequently and clean cookware, plates, utensils and touch-sensitive surfaces such as kitchen handles. Door.

    5. Provide information and protection to people

Restaurant owners can take several steps to protect their delivery drivers from contact with the coronavirus. Start by describing delivery instructions at the time a customer places their order online or over the phone. Many restaurants have started making contactless deliveries to accommodate social distancing. Thanks to the contactless deposit, the customer pays in advance and the driver leaves the grocery package on the door so the two parties don't interact. Since customers can place these orders online and request a contactless deposit, this provides another layer of protection between your employees or drivers and the public. You should make sure that you are offering online ordering offers and new shipping methods on your website and social media channels. Make sure the staff who receive food orders are aware of all contactless instructions and share what is available to customers. If you don't add your own online ordering system and delivery fleet and instead work with a third-party delivery app with a delivery app like Vuba vuba, they have likely already implemented it. Precautions. Find out what measures they are taking so that you, too, can pass them on to customers. Opt for contactless payments over the phone with cardless transactions, through your website, or through a touch-enabled payment terminal.

    6. Handle packages properly

Inevitably, you and your restaurant staff need to touch food packaging to fulfill orders and you need to work together to do so safely. Maintain social distance by avoiding distributing packages between them. Instead, put the item on a table, and then walk away so the other person can safely grab it.

    7. Be smart with suppliers

It is important to protect your suppliers as well as your guests and employees. You can use the same contactless payment method with providers as with delivery customers. Again limit the number of people handling these items.

Also, ask your suppliers what precautions they are taking to slow the spread of COVID-19 so you can pass this information on to your employees and customers.

In addition to implementing these food safety tips in your restaurant, read the Rwandan Ministry of Health guidelines before finalizing or communicating your restaurant's approach to the pandemic. They are the best sources for updated information in a situation that changes from day to day.

Times are difficult right now and you are focused on your business. However, remember to also take care of yourself and try to relieve your stress. By protecting your employees and customers by following food safety advice and by keeping your restaurant pristine, you are playing an important role in fighting the spread of Covid-19.

The best ingredients for child-safe disinfectant sprays

Here is a list of the ingredients to look for when shopping for cleaning products. Once you know you are pregnant, you will pretty quickly find that your entire life changes depending on the way you cleanse yourself . Not only will you find that your favorite household cleaners can cause nausea, but also that certain cleaning products can create fumes that can irritate your baby.

When shopping for disinfectants that are right for you and your newborn, do you know which ingredients are safest? Most mothers don't know this and usually find a better and safer alternative by talking to other mothers and reading articles like this one.

Keep scrolling to read on. Click the button below to start this article in quick view.

RELATED: 10 Safe Baby Disinfectant Sprays

Pregnancy Birth Baby says pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid chemical cleaners, household cleaners, as well as paints, pesticides and a host of other toxic chemicals used daily in the EU at home. For example, mothballs can cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea in pregnant women. Not only does this affect the mother, but constant exposure to harsh chemicals puts her at greater risk that her child will have birth defects and other health problems in the future.

In an article published on WebMD , he listed some tips on how to keep your home clean without using chemicals that could harm you and your baby. Try to buy brands that are oil-free, environmentally friendly, non-toxic, phosphate-free, and VOC-free.

If you wonder how harmful household cleaning products can affect pregnant women and babies, you might be surprised how they can affect your children's health. Harsh cleaning products cause problems like eczema, allergies, eye and respiratory irritation. There are even studies showing a link between phthalates and the altered hormone levels in some young babies.

    Create your own disinfectant spray

Did you know that you can make your own cleaner at home that is non-toxic? Molly Maid listed a great homemade disinfectant spray with just white vinegar, distilled water, tea tree oil, and lemon oil. Essential oils and white vinegar help clean toys, doorknobs, and surfaces quickly. Not only is this beneficial for your family, but you always have enough to cleanse. It's also an effective solution for cleaning toys your baby puts in their mouths.

    Baking soda and vinegar

Baking soda is a useful ingredient that can clean almost everything in your home as well as vinegar. In fact, vinegar can do most of the things that baking soda can't cleanse. Vinegar is good for windows and mirrors in your home, and baking soda is good for cleaning drains, cleaning dirt off walls, cleaning tiles, and cleaning tiles. However, baking soda alone does not disinfect. You'll need to add another agent like alcohol and essential oils to kill the bacteria.

    Non-toxic products

Black + Berry Living offers an all-purpose citrus and eucalyptus cleaner that is safe for pregnant mothers and babies. Today there are many brands that focus on making non-toxic cleaning solutions for everyday use. The more natural the detergent, the more likely it is to harm pregnant women, breastfeeding women, or young babies.

    Citrus ingredients

Many organic and non-toxic disinfectants contain a citrus ingredient as an active ingredient. You may see cleaning sprays for oranges, mandarins, lemons, limes, or grapefruits that not only smell great, but are just as effective as their bleach and ammonia counterparts. Brands like Lemishine use citric acids , which like any other commercial product, cut through stains and grease. However, replacing toxic ingredients with essential oils and citric acids removes toxic fumes that other big brands can create.

Switching to child-safe cleaning products may require some adjustment first, especially if you are used to associating cleaning with the smell of bleach. Many baby cleaners do not have an antiseptic odor, which puts many cleaning parents off. Just know that your baby will appreciate the special care and love you give to making sure your home is clean and safe.

3 apps to help you rinse the water off your phone and clean the speakers

Cleaning the loudspeakers of your mobile phone should be done frequently, especially to remove any water that may have accumulated.

The introduction of water into the mobile phone, regardless of its liquid resistance, can damage the various components of the terminal such as in the housings.

In order to avoid these consequences, we explain in this manual how to remove the water from your mobile phone and how to clean the speakers with 3 specially developed apps.

Before we talk about these very useful uses, let's briefly focus on the process of cleaning your speakers and how important it is to keep them working properly.

Why you should flush the water and clean the speakers

Water is not a good friend of your phone, although it has some resistance. Therefore, when your cellphone is completely submerged in water, there are a few methods you need to follow to restore it .

Regardless of how you clean it, it can leave a small amount of liquid that prevents components from working properly, such as speakers, whose sound may be distorted.

You can use these apps to rinse the water off your phone and clean the speakers.

To avoid this problem, some devices like the latest Apple watch or the Samsung Galaxy Active Watch family have a feature that ejects the top - water speakers for perfect sound.

Android phones do not yet have this tool. However, you can integrate it through third-party applications available on Google Play.

These applications perform a very interesting method of expelling the water and dirt that has accumulated from the housings.

In particular, they reproduce a low frequency tone that blows more air than if another tone were played.

It is this amount of air that manages to remove water and dirt from the speakers , as we can see in the following image from GadgetHacks.

Additionally, one of the application administrators we'll talk about below recommends turning the volume on the cell phone to the max and placing it on a flat surface before proceeding with the process.

These apps are real lifesavers for those who suffer from distorted noises due to the buildup of water and dirt on their mobile devices.

Before recommending the best uses for emitting water and cleaning your mobile speakers, we want to remind you of 5 useful tips to help you clean your phone effectively .

Applications for emitting water and cleaning your mobile speakers

Once you know the process these cleaning apps go through, we recommend the best one that you can install on your Android to drive off water and clean speakers.

    Speaker cleaner

If your phone has survived exposure to water but the external speakers aren't sounding like you want, Speaker Cleaner is one of the best apps to help you fix the problem.

Speaker Cleaner is free to download from Google Play and it plays a low-frequency sound that expels air, causing water and dirt to collect on the device's speakers.

Remember that you need to connect any headset to the mobile phone so that your process is successful.

Repair the case - throw out the water

Another application for playing sine waves at preset frequencies is " Fix the Speaker - Eject Water", available for free on the Play Store.

There are two cleaning modes , automatic or manual. The latter allows you to choose the exact frequency of sound to drive out the water and clean the speakers.

Those responsible for the application promise a success rate of over 80% , so that their usefulness is almost guaranteed.

    Great speaker cleaner

With Super Speaker Cleaner you can clean your mobile speakers with one click .

Lay the phone down, turn the volume up, unplug it from the wall socket and start cleaning to see how this free app removes water and dirt from the speakers.

After the process, you can check how the distorted sound disappears .

5 Tips for Being a Homeschooling Expert Distance Learning Success

Due to the coronavirus, school districts are increasingly turning to distance learning this fall. While these changes can be intimidating and unprecedented, Spooner assures us that at the end of the day you can be sure that you know your children better than anyone and that all they really need is "something." a safe environment in which to learn and grow. "

    Video transcript

REBECCA SPOONER: Hello, my name is Rebecca Spooner. I am a home mother with five young children. I myself was home-schooled for most of my childhood. For anyone trying to surf their kids remotely or home school, let me share my top five tips to help you be as successful as possible.

The first tip is to adjust your expectations. Your children are at home and you can customize your school experience accordingly. You can make it more natural and organic. So I encourage you not to compare expectations with what you think, but really to take the time to find out how it will be for your family.

The second tip is that balance is a myth. Instead of seeing it that I have to balance everything perfectly now or on that day, see the balance as something bigger and try to achieve an overall balance instead of second by second. If you have that deadline to go to work, or if someone is sick or whatever situation, it will be the tipping point for a while. And you will get it back tomorrow or next week.

The third tip is that you will encounter obstacles. Waiting for you. Your children can wake up with a bad attitude. Maybe they run into an obstacle and don't understand something.

To go for a walk. Take a break. Don't insist because you are getting nowhere. Your kids won't suddenly understand this math concept if you hammer it a little harder.

You will need a little break. And when they come back, be it after a snack, a hike or whatever, it often suddenly clicks because the stress is gone.

Tip number four is routine about the schedule. Sit back and plan your time. At 7:15 am I'll have all the time before my kids wake up. But then the alarm goes off and you keep pressing the snooze button and suddenly everything goes out the window. And now my whole day is wasted

I really encourage you to establish a routine. When I wake up, I'll do it in any situation. And my children, when they wake up we have breakfast together and then read. An overview that now offers flexibility for obstacles that you know will arise.

Tip number five. I want to leave you something really practical and tangible. Many of you are trying to figure out how to configure this. I have a room in our home dedicated to our homeschooling experience.

I encourage you to get some sort of cart to put all of your pens, markers, scissors, and glue in, and we'll take it everywhere. So if we want to lie on the living room floor because it's warm and cozy, then we will. If you don't have room for a classroom at home, adapt. Because every situation is different.

So keep that in mind at the end of the day. You know your children. You can trust that. You can make mistakes. You will make mistakes. Your children will make mistakes.

But you will do the best you can and that is all you need. They need a safe environment in which to learn and grow. And I hope you have a great year.

Weekend Home Improvement: Five Household Chores To Break Up This Weekend

Ask a practical person and they will tell you: The weekend shifts start the Friday before.

This is where you need to gather your tools, materials and blueprints so that you can break out at sunrise and make the most of the day.

The earlier you start chores like painting and cleaning, the more time things will have to dry, soak and disinfect. The more organized you are ahead of home improvement jobs, the more time you'll spend instead of walking around the hardware store dreaming of more jobs than you possibly could.

    CLEAN YOUR CHANNELS

It's the first day of spring next week, and that means you have no more excuses not to tackle your most feared household chore: cleaning the gutters.

As ungrateful as it is, it is a crucial job . A clogged gutter can push water from under the eaves onto your roof and cause leaks. A build-up of leaves can destroy the metal gutters and lead to further leaks.

TOOLS: Ladder and ladder bracket , gloves, trowel and bucket.

WORKING TIME: 2-3 hours depending on the size of the house.

    BUILD A GLASS HOUSE

Give those green fingers something to do and get ready for the tomato season.

With the arrival of spring and summer, you may want to grow seedlings and make the most of the warm weather to grow tomatoes and eggplants. You're going to need a greenhouse.

There are many options, from cheap plastic houses to The Warehouse and hardware store to bespoke greenhouses, but a small DIY glass house could be as simple as a frame and some windows made from recycled glass.

TIP: Plan your glass house, get advice online or at your hardware store.

WORKING TIME: 1 hour - per day, depending on the size and complexity of the canopy.

    START YOUR SPRING CLEANING

Dust the winter and the depression of the city.

Spring cleaning can be cathartic, a great way to sweep, scrub, and fix problems year-round, and metaphorically improve your future prospects. A clean home makes everything else in your life more manageable.

To make it a less monumental task, I tend to spread it out over a few weekends. Whichever route you choose, our handy spring cleaning checklist will help you organize the work.

TOOLS: cleaning products, rags, rags and newspapers (for windows and mirrors). A good pair of gloves.

WORKING HOURS: 2-3 hours a day on two weekends for thorough cleaning.

    CLEAN YOUR TOILET DEEPLY

If you still can't solve the full spring cleaning problem, then how about giving your dirtiest household stains a big boost?

TOOLS: detergent, gloves, rag, brush - nose clips, optional.

WORKING TIME: 30 minutes including stain removal time.

    STORAGE YOUR PANTRY

Glasses are great for organizing your pantry. They are reusable, beautiful, and keep products dry.

If your pantry looks like mine, it's a mess of cans, packages, cans, and jars hanging loosely in any order.

Here is your chance to fix that problem and create the Pinterest- and Instagram-worthy pantry of your dreams! Or at least solve it so you always know where your lenses are.

TOOLS: jars, pocket clips , labels and markers.

WORKING TIME: 1 to 2 hours if you also put your dry products in jars.

If you're like me, you probably have a lot of questions about cleaning your sheet masks. Since face masks don't go anywhere anytime soon, we'd better learn how to clean them properly to make sure they are as effective as possible.

To learn more about how to properly clean face masks at home, we spoke to Diann Peart, Ph.D., Founder and CEO of Truce , and Dr. Michelle Henry , a New York-based dermatologist. Read on for answers to some of your biggest questions.

How do I clean my fabric mask?

Sheet masks are the most common type of face mask and the easiest to clean, according to Peart. "They should be hand washed or washed in the washing machine in hot, soapy water, then you can put the mask in the dryer," she says.

Cleaning your mask is important not only to reduce the spread of germs, but it can also help you avoid skin irritation and skin problems like maskne .

"Washable masks and other materials for face coverings should regularly (eg. As daily and when soiled) with water and a mild detergent such as Tide Free & Gentle wash" , says Dr. Henry. . "A clean mask keeps your skin clean."

How often should i wash my mask?

Unfortunately, now is not the time for a lazy beauty routine. "Most experts recommend washing and drying the mask after each use," says Peart In The Know. "Make sure you wash your hands before and after handling the mask in case there are virus drops on the face of the mask."

If you have masks in between face washes then you can still get disposable masks , cloth masks and even cloth masks that our editors use on a daily basis .

Should I hand or machine wash my mask?

Peart says washing hands or machine washing is enough. "According to the CDC, masks need to be washed based on how often you use them, so if you wear your mask for running or work every day, wash it every day," he says.

Personally, I like to wash my mask off with a small brush, mainly to remove makeup and lipstick residue.

When should I throw away my mask?

Just because you wash your masks all the time doesn't mean it isn't time to throw them away. "If your mask is dirty or damaged, you have to throw it away," says Peart, although he does not recommend throwing it away.

"Don't throw your dirty or damaged mask in the trash. It can contain dangerous germs, "he adds. "Wash the mask, dry it on the highest setting, fold it up, put it in a sealed plastic bag, and then throw it away." Always remember to wash your hands before and after handling the face shield. ""

What can my face mask clean?

Surprisingly, UV rays can clean your face masks and other surfaces. " Ultraviolet rays can disinfect your mask . There are special machines that can be used, but it is rare for them to be at home."

However, Peart recommends that you use extreme care when cleaning your masks with UV rays as this has its limitations. "Since UV rays can only disinfect what shines, the shadows cast by the tiny folds of a mask could prevent those stains from being decontaminated," he advises.

You can also use natural sources like sunlight if you have a little more free time. "When you have the time, sunlight is great, but it takes a long time," says Peart. "For the time it would take, you'd better put a mask in a brown paper bag and hang it on a well-ventilated porch for seven days. The pathogen will be dead anyway. ""

    Can i lighten my mask?

While many of us think that bleach is the best germicidal agent, it carries great risks as an irritant to the body and respiratory system. Essentially not. "While bleach is great for disinfecting hard surfaces or cleaning towels and bed linen, even dilute bleach is not a recommended cleanser for face masks." Peart explains. "Bleach is irritating to the respiratory tract, so avoid wearing it in masks."

Orange Intelligenze: The advantages of RoboSpin for aluminum welding

Rust formation is one of the challenges when trying to detect weld metal. Even if a good solder is made, oxidation can build up on the soldering tips.

"Rust creates inconsistencies in welds," said Andre Young . At KUKA Robotics, Young is responsible for the business development of Tier 1 and OEM (Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers).

According to Young, each OEM and Tier 1 sheet metal manufacturer has their own techniques for dealing with rust problems. Sometimes they grind the surface to remove the oxidation layer and other people do some chemical cleaning of the aluminum. In either case, the oxidation build-up over time will require a bandage to clean the spot weld tip.

Another tool in the tool belt for spot welding devices is RoboSpin from KUKA Robotics , the application software that rotates around the TCP (center point of the tool) during the welding process.

Prevents the tips from sticking to the metal, which improves the quality of the weld and extends the life of the tips.

"The rotation creates abrasion as the weld is created and the tips are cleaned as the rotation moves," said Young. "You get good contact with the aluminum, reduce that surface resistance, direct the energy where you want it, and create a good weld."

COVID-19 and masks: tips for families

Why use a face mask or face mask?

COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets that people release when they speak, sing, cough, or sneeze. With ongoing research, we now know that the virus can be transmitted by people without symptoms, which means some people may be contagious and not even notice it.

This is one reason why physical distance is so important in places where COVID-19 prevails. However, it is not always possible to stay away from others in crowded public places. Therefore, it is recommended to wear a cloth mask in such environments to protect one another.

Remember, however, that a mask alone will not prevent the spread of COVID-19. We should all continue to exercise physical distance and wash our hands frequently. If we take these steps together, we can beat COVID-19.

What type of mask should I buy for my family?

Non-medical masks (also called cloth masks or face covers ) - If you and your family live in an area where COVID-19 is widespread and you are not experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, non-medical masks are recommended.

Medical masks: Medical masks are rare worldwide due to the pandemic. They are recommended if you or a family member are at increased risk of developing serious illness from COVID-19 (people over 60 or with underlying health problems) or if you are caring for someone with COVID-19. A medical mask should be worn to protect others when you have symptoms of COVID-19.

What kind of cloth mask is better?

Cloth masks or face coverings are available from a variety of materials and can be made at home or purchased from a store. While research into the use of sheet masks is ongoing, their effectiveness depends on the type of fabrics used and the number of layers. The World Health Organization recommends three layers consisting of:

    • an inner layer of absorbent material such as cotton
    • a middle layer of fleece such as polypropylene
    • an outer layer of non-absorbent material, such as a polyester or a polyester blend

Whatever type of face covering you choose, it should cover your nose, mouth and chin and be secured with elastic ties or ties.

When should my family wear a mask?

Check if local authorities require the wearing of masks and specific recommendations for the age you live in in certain contexts.

Whether your children should wear a mask depends on a number of factors, including their age and their ability to wear a mask safely and appropriately. See advice from UNICEF and the World Health Organization for more information.

If COVID-19 is prevalent in your area, a sheet mask should be worn in all public places where it is difficult to maintain a physical distance from others, and always in indoor public spaces. Whenever possible, avoid entering crowded areas and enclosed indoor spaces with poor ventilation.

There is a lot of inaccurate information floating around about mask wear and COVID-19. Therefore, use reliable sources such as UNICEF, WHO, and your national and local health authorities when making decisions about your family's health.

When shouldn't you use a mask?

The masks should not be worn by those who cannot remove the mask without assistance, including infants and young children, or by those who have difficulty breathing.

UNICEF and WHO recommend that children under 5 years of age do not need to wear masks. This is based on child safety and recognizes that children of different ages can achieve developmental milestones.

Some countries have different recommendations for the use of masks by children. It is therefore important that you check with your local authorities for specific age requirements. If children aged 5 and under are required to wear masks, you or another caregiver must be in sight to monitor the safe use of the mask.

If you or someone in your family has an illness or disability that makes it difficult to wear a mask, talk to your doctor about what is best for you.

When exercising, choose a location that does not require a mask, e.g. At home or an area (such as outdoors) where you can keep a safe physical distance from other people. Children and adults should not wear masks when exercising or doing physical activity so as not to impair breathing. Sweat can also wet the mask, making it difficult to breathe and making it difficult for germs to grow.

What should I look out for when buying a mask for my children?

Many masks are designed for adults and are not suitable for children. When purchasing masks, choose one that is the right size for your child. Whether you are buying or making masks for your children, make sure their mouth, nose and chin are covered and that they don't have holes in their sides or obstruct their view. Make sure you can breathe comfortably in the mask while you walk and speak quickly.

How to clean a cloth mask

Wash the masks at least once a day with soap or detergent, preferably in hot water (at least 60 degrees Celsius). If machine washable, use the warmest setting suitable for the fabric type. When washing your hands, use hot, soapy water. After washing, the mask must be completely dry before you use it again. Keep the masks in a clean bag.
